My niece is Nell- she is 6. She hasn't got any nicknames just called Nell. She has an alliterate surname too but I think it goes quite well.

I like it but it makes me think of Nell Gwynn - not that it matters!

Not a bad association? I've always liked Nell Gwynn.

Lovely name OP.

I went to school with a Nell, not short for anything. It was very old fashioned at the time (90s) but suited her really well and it seems to be very fashionable now. I like it, it's very cute for a little girl.

I'm Nellie or Nell in a particular family/friends group. I actually quite like it. Although strangely it morphed into 'Mel' for some people over the years (Nellie to smelly Nellie to Smell to Mel). This is massively outing Grin

How about Nella?

Jooni · 07/06/2017 13:15

I love Nell, on its own and short for any of the Helen/Eleanor names. Penelope is nice too, but Penny feels more intuitive perhaps?

Nell was a strong contender for this baby, due next week, but he's a boy! Maybe next time...

MikeUniformMike · 07/06/2017 13:18

Blah, it works like this
Helen shortens to Hel,
Nell sounds better.

WhattheChuff · 07/06/2017 13:22

Oh Nell is lovely.

I have heard it as a shortening of the name 'Parnell' which I think was popular in early Tudor England. So pretty and unusual.

RuthB4 · 07/06/2017 13:55

I know a beautiful sparky 5 year old called Nell (full name). It's a beautiful name on its own IMO. And I much prefer it to Elinor or Penelope (although Penelope is nice - and Penny very sweet).

RuthB4 · 07/06/2017 13:57

Oh and the other names you listed are also really nice. Especially Tessa and Charlotte. Dillon is nice although I prefer the spelling Dylan. And Patrick is a name that is slowly growing on me. I'm really not keen on Pat or Paddy though!

Sophronia · 07/06/2017 17:04

I like it short for Elinor/Eleanor.

Waterfeature · 07/06/2017 17:37

I can't help thinking of Nelly the Elephant. Sorry.

allthatnonsense · 07/06/2017 17:40

I met a little Nell recently and she was just gorgeous in every way

HouseSparrow · 07/06/2017 17:43

I know two lovely little girls called Nell (not short for anything). I've never known either of them to be called Nellie. I really like it.

MargaretCabbage · 07/06/2017 17:46

I know a grown up Nell (not short for anything) and she is absolutely lovely. I think it's a great name.

29Palms · 07/06/2017 17:52

I can't understand the love on MN for Nell.

It makes me think Death Knell.
'The curfew tolls the knell of parting day' etc

And Nellie is unspeakably awful.

Cami12 · 08/06/2017 21:25

Love Nell! Ideally just on its own. Or maybe short for Penelope. (Not keen on Eleanor Elinor or Helen tbh).

SuperBeagle · 08/06/2017 21:31

Agree with 29 that it makes me think of death knell.

And Nellie makes me think of an elephant, or a shit 90s rapper.

Amethistle · 08/06/2017 21:38

Only just heard of it about two weeks ago when I finished the new Paula Hawkins novel.

I like it, but it's not to my tastes.

pigletpie29 · 08/06/2017 21:45

I'm a late thirties Helen and I've never once been called Nell.

I really like it though so I'm thinking of making it my new name 😀
