Quite like Arwen and Galadriel... dunno if boy or girl yet but love these names. Any other LOTR names?

My friends named their cats LOTR names; Sam, Merry, Pippin, Bill, and I cant remember any others. All perfectly good people names too Smile

LittleRedRidingHood99 · 07/06/2017 21:19

Arwen is so pretty!

Lemondrop99 · 07/06/2017 23:42

Thorin, Rohan and Arwen are great. Galadriel feels a bit much - and too close to Gladys - for me!

PattyPenguin · 08/06/2017 20:09

So I went and got my Tolkien encyclopedia from the bookshelf. From the wider Tolkien universe, as well at LOTR, what about the following?

Amroth (m) - an Elven king (and also a place name in Pembrokeshire (if you want to disguise the origin)
Anarion (m) - a king of Gondor
Arien (f) - a spirit of fire
Arwen (f) - Elven princess (also a real-world girl's name in Wales)
Dwalin (m) - one of the dwarves in 'The Hobbit' (Dvalinn is a real-world name still used in the Scandinavian countries)
Elladan (m) - one of Arwen's brothers - possibly too close to female names like Ella to give to a boy.
Elros (m) - brother of Arwen's father Elrond, and less well-known
Lorien (m) - a spirit, keeper of dreams
Melian (f) - queen of an Elven realm
Tilion (m) - spirit, guardian of the moon
Vana (f) - spirit of spring, called "the ever-young"

Beren (m) and Luthien (f) are both lovely, but may be too well-known, especially with the recent publication of a new version of the Tale of Beren and Luthien.

Thanks @PattyPenguin
I am also Welsh so I think Arwen is a firm favourite!

I know a Rohan and a Tinuviel :) Agree Arwen is lovely.

Just putting it out there, obvs not LoTR, but I also know a Tanwen which I think is particularly beautiful. Ceridwen is also lovely. Basically you can't go wrong with that group of girls names!

Bobbybobbins · 08/06/2017 20:55

I teach a lovely boy called Rohan. Love Arwen!

TomHardysWhore · 08/06/2017 20:56

I know a Srilankan Rohan. He's very handsome.

AdaColeman · 08/06/2017 21:01

As you are Welsh, do consider Taliesin for a boy, not LOTR but a fabulous name and a wonderful story too.

Thingymaboob · 08/06/2017 21:02

@AdaColeman how would you pronounce that? I'm ashamed to call myself Welsh!

Gingersstuff · 08/06/2017 21:12

My son is a Rohan. Its Gaelic meaning is "red haired one" and "keeper of wolves" which given he has beautiful red hair and we have 4 big hairy dogs, is quite appropriate Grin

Thingymaboob · 08/06/2017 21:13

@Gingersstuff I love that. We might also end up with a ginger haired baby

Taliesin is pronounced, more or less, tal-YES-in. It's the name of an early medieval (very early) poet, or possibly more than one poet of the same name in different parts of Britain. Nickname is often Tal.

Rohan is also the surname of an aristocratic family in Brittany, from the place name Rohan, or Roc'han in Breton - which I think means "little rock".

Teachervoice · 08/06/2017 21:42

I love this thread OP: you may have actually inspired me to put Thorin securely back on the list. My husband is also Welsh, although I'm not but did study there so we're looking at very similar names to you generally!

AdaColeman · 08/06/2017 21:46

Yes, pronounced as Patty says.

I first heard the name many years ago, as I was going round a retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery in Cardiff. I was sitting lost in wonder when an old gentleman came and sat by me, and told me the story of Taliesin, the subject of the painting captivating me.

We chatted for quite a while, then as I was leaving he said, "I painted all these you know".

AgadorSpartacus · 08/06/2017 21:50

Another vote for Rohan.

My DS is Rohan (Celtic pronounced Ro-an silent H)

The Sanskrit Rohan is pronounced Ro-HAN emphasis on the HAN. Which is the LOTR way I think.

AgadorSpartacus · 08/06/2017 21:51

Oh also love Thorin and Arwen in particular.

SimonNeilshair · 08/06/2017 21:55

We named our dd Eowyn, which we loved but when we told people her name everyone was Confused. After 2 weeks I couldn't stand it any more so we changed it Sad I still think it's a beautiful name but in my hormonal state i couldn't bear the thought of dd being ridiculed forever more

Firenight · 08/06/2017 21:56

Elanor or Estel are probably least obvious.

My DD has an obscure Tolkien middle name (too outing to detail).

Firenight · 08/06/2017 21:57

Luthien was the name Tolkien used for his wife. I've always thought it would be disrespectful to use it.

Gingersstuff · 08/06/2017 21:59

Agador that's how our Rohan is pronounced too, as Ro-an. He so suits it too.

ememem84 · 08/06/2017 22:11

I wanted to call baby ds to be thorin. Dh vetoed.

Rohan however.... that may change his mind
