Stepping on toes with name

Myself and partner are really struggling to find any girls name we like I mean have been trying to decide way before pregnancy!! The only name we do really like is Milly. The problem is my niece is named Emily (often called Emy.) We see Emily about once a month and are quite close. Age gap between Emy and baby will be 5 years.

What I am asking is how would you feel, is it ok to use Milly.

Sounds absolutely fine to me!

Laurajonesy · 03/06/2017 22:39

I don't see a problem with that, two of my neices are Tilly and Millie and they both have different mums (both my sisters) it's never caused an issue one is 16 and one is 3

DramaAlpaca · 03/06/2017 22:40

I'm sure it'll be fine, and I'd be willing to bet that young Emy would be delighted to have a baby cousin with a name that sounds like the end of her name. I wouldn't mind at all anyway.

girlsnames · 03/06/2017 22:42

Thank you. First 3 posts and I am feeling better about it already.

My niece is called Emma
I am having a baby in July and if it's a girl it will be Emily...

I think it will be fine .

Wolfiefan · 03/06/2017 22:44

I have a child with one of those names. If my sister had a girl and used the other name I really wouldn't feel she was stepping on my toes in the slightest. Both lovely names.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 03/06/2017 22:45

Niece is Abby and DD will be Addy if she's a girl! I don't care a jot Grin Go for it :)

EllaHen · 03/06/2017 22:45

Aye, it's totally fine.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 03/06/2017 22:47

If she's Emily known as Emmy, then. Its absukiteky fine to use Millie

Sophronia · 03/06/2017 22:53

I think it's fine.

MrsMoastyToasty · 03/06/2017 22:55

Would Milly be a NN for Amelia /Emilia?

Wildernesswandering · 03/06/2017 22:58

Millie is a NN for Millicent which is lovely!

SelfObsessionHoney · 03/06/2017 23:00

We have two Anna's in our family. There's about 7 years between them. They're Big Anna and Little Anna. No one really batted an eye.

girlsnames · 03/06/2017 23:04

We would probably just have it as Milly but have toyed with the idea of Matilda.

Lemondrop99 · 03/06/2017 23:18

I think Emmy and Milly is fine

I think Matilda shortens more naturally to Tilly than Milly. Call her Matilda and you will likely get people using Tilly. If you want a longer name, the above suggestion of Amelia or similar works well. Also Millicent/Mildred (not keen personally) or Camille/Camilla. And Amanda (although I've never ready understood how you get Milly from that)

catsarenice · 04/06/2017 03:02

Took me a few seconds to wonder why you were doubting using Millie because of Emily so I don't think they are a immediately overly similar at all. I used to have a cat called Millie - I think it's a lovely name. Go for it!

FloralCouchPants · 04/06/2017 03:17

DH sister named niece something similar to our DD name, and they are 7 months apart. If they have a son his name will be something close to my DS name as well. It's never been an issue and both the girls have nickname that are very different from each other

Oysterbabe · 04/06/2017 10:18

I prefer it as a shortening for Amelia. Milly is nice for a baby but I can't imagine it for an adult.

blahthisistoohard · 04/06/2017 10:33

Reading your post I couldn't understand why you would be the least bit concerned!

AmysTiara · 04/06/2017 10:40

It's fine. They are different names. Millie doesn't have to be short for something so don't worry.

girlsnames · 04/06/2017 12:23

Thank you all for you reassurance. I am very surprised and relieved that there are no posts so far saying it wouldn't be ok.

My brother and my cousin have the same name. It's a common name and they are about 6 years apart. I think it's fine.
