I have no idea how to pronounce it.

disneykid · 02/06/2017 00:53

God knows how to say it but it reminded me of a meringue when I attempted.

C3H8O · 02/06/2017 01:18

I don't like it.

squoosh · 02/06/2017 01:36

Moo-rig or moy-rig?

Looks like the name of a baddie in a sci fi show. The Menace of Meurig.

toffeeboffin · 02/06/2017 01:56

Pronounced like Keurig?

SuperBeagle · 02/06/2017 02:00

Reminds me of a Keurig coffee machine

nooka · 02/06/2017 02:16

I've googled it and see it's a Welsh name after a cool sounding medieval king. Are you Welsh and in Wales OP? If so why not? In England it might cause a few initial issues with pronunciation.

nooka · 02/06/2017 02:18

pronunciation

blahthisistoohard · 02/06/2017 03:21

Would be a 'no' from me unless you're in Wales, wouldn't personally have a clue how to pronounce it!

soundsystem · 02/06/2017 03:37

I love it!

I mean, yes, outside of Wales he/you will have to repeat it a few times and spell it out, but that's hardly the end of the world!

soundsystem · 02/06/2017 03:43

Although it will annoy you when he's a toddler and people ask his name and he says, perfectly clearly "I'm called Meurig" and they look at you and say "Mark? Matthew? Thomas?" and a whole bunch of other names that sound NOTHING like what he just said. And you say for the millionth time, "He's called Meurig" (like he just bloody well told you!)

I may be projecting...

MammieBear · 02/06/2017 07:51

Looks hard to pronounce, makes me think of Morag do you like that?

Veterinari · 02/06/2017 07:56

It's sounds nice and I don't think the spelling is an issue (people will learn) but the only obvious shortening in Mae which might not be great for a boy?

HoratioNightboy · 02/06/2017 22:50

I rather like it, but I feels quite feminine. I was surprised when a PP said it's a boy's name. Arte you set on a Welsh name? If not, how about Myer, which sounds similar to the first part of Meurig but sounds more masculine.

officerhinrika · 02/06/2017 22:52

Lovely

PandaG · 02/06/2017 22:53

Have a friend who is part welsh and is Meurig. I initially had a bit of a mental block regarding pronunciation, until his wife said not oil rig but my rig, and then I finally got it. Like the name as said friend is lovely. I'd probably expect a welsh connection though.

blahthisistoohard · 02/06/2017 22:56

Is this a boys name?! Really thought it was a girls name until other people commented otherwise!

BelafonteRavenclaw · 02/06/2017 23:02

Initially I couldn't work out how to pronounce it, but then it clicked and I really like it. My 2DSs have very Welsh names and I've not had many problems with spelling etc. But we do live in Wales.

CBeebiesaddict · 03/06/2017 05:47

Lovely name (am in Wales though)

disastrouslee · 03/06/2017 05:55

I like Meurig, I'm a fluent Welsh speaker and would pronounce it May-rigg with a rolled r.

It's true you'd have to tell people how to pronounce it, but once you've done that it's hardly the most complicated of Welsh names.

Bellatrixandstrange · 03/06/2017 06:11

I love it. I have a Welsh name, now live in England, people ask once and then remember so don't worry about that.

mathanxiety · 03/06/2017 08:08

The spelling is too similar to Keurig.

SoupDragon · 03/06/2017 08:19

I like the pronunciation but it's not going to get pronounced properly if you aren't in Wales. There will be lots of correcting people (which obviously isn't necessarily a problem but worth bearing in mind)

DD's name gets mispronounced a lot as people substitute a familiar name when they haven't quite heard.

Dolwar · 09/06/2017 21:39

I like Meurig. It's a lovely old welsh name. He may have to spell it out outside of Wales but having been on here a while and working with children, there's a lot out there who have amended normal names to ridiculous spellings so that's not an issue.
As for being similar to Keurig - I wouldn't worry about that as Keurig is a wtf name, sounds made up and chavvy.

TroysMammy · 09/06/2017 21:43

There is also Eurig pronounced eyerig.
