Modern but normal boys names

Any ideas?

We are looking for a boy's name that is 'modern', doesn't make them sound like from a different time period or sound old-fashioned, but is still also a normal name and not made up or too out-there..

Big ask! Grin

"Modern" isn't a thing with names unless it's made up!

All of the normal names are old...things like Tom and Oliver are popular and old...

What about Seth? Or Emyr...?

JoyJoyJoyJoy · 29/05/2017 13:34

Hmm true... Grin

I meant, not names like Edgar or Thomas or Stanley... But more something that sounds like the current time, and modern and cool sounding without being painfully wannabe-cool iyswim. Actually Seth is a great suggestion! So, names like Seth?

Caleb?

Ontopofthesunset · 29/05/2017 13:36

My sons' classes have been full of boys with names like Ollie/Oliver, Jamie/James, Matt/Matthew, Tom/Thomas, Sam/Samuel, Will/William, Harry/Henry, Ben/Benjamin/Benedict, Ed/Ted/Ned/Edward and Alex/Alexander. None of those are 'modern' but they are very popular, well-liked names. Is that the kind of name you mean, ie not Arthur, Hubert or Eustace?

ArseyTussle · 29/05/2017 13:38

Seth immediately came to my mind too. It's a great name.

As well as Seth I also like Christian.

Christian sounds very dated. I rather like Edgar.

putdownyourphone · 29/05/2017 13:44

Leo - cool and modern but not obscure

MikeUniformMike · 29/05/2017 13:45

Angus, Magnus, Rory or Guy?

user1491572121 · 29/05/2017 13:47

Christian was popular in the 70s...those names will be a rarity still in 20 years but will be just coming back when OP's son is thinking of having his own!

Rather like names such as Jean and Pam...mark my words! We don't like them because they're our Mother's names...but our DC will see them as we see Pearl and similar...

BeesOnTheWing · 29/05/2017 13:48

Cormac

JoyJoyJoyJoy · 29/05/2017 13:48

Thanks All! Will add Seth to the list.

Ontop See that's the problem, all those names are certainly nice and rightly well-liked, but they have been well-liked 50, 30 and 10 years ago as well... I'm thinking more modern in the sense of more distinctively like a young boy today, not a name that an older relative would share as well. But then we also don't like excessively 'cool' names like Rocco or Jago or all the current last name type names either.

Exactly putdown - cool and modern but not obscure is exactly what we're after. Leo is perfect! (though unfortunately DH has vetoed). Cormac is great too, thanks!
