What do you ladies think to the name Fia (pronounce the same as Thea)? TIA x

I think Fia short for Sophia is nice. I really don't like Thea. It just sounds incomplete to me, a 'meh' sound rather than a name.

MrsDustyBusty · 24/05/2017 09:08

I always enjoy the "I can't pronounce stuff properly so I think the name you want to call your child is awful and doesn't exist".

I don't think it's actually possible to be more insular and aggressively ignorant than that.

I have always struggled to pronounce TH's, which DH finds hilarious...anyway, when I tried to suggest Thea as a name for DD he laughed and said I would always pronounce it Fia by mistake. They are different names and not sure how they are the same OP?

MrsABrown72 · 24/05/2017 10:28

My daughter is a Fia, short for Sophia as that is how she said her name when she started talking.

YouWhatMate · 24/05/2017 11:45

I pronounce "fear" as one syllable (I thought everyone did), so Fia really doesn't sound much like it, due to having two quite distinct syllables, like Thea.

Herewegogo · 24/05/2017 15:08

I had to say "fear" out loud in an English accent several times then to understand how on earth you would pronounce it with one syllable! But I am Welsh so there's no such thing as a one syllable word ;)

I think that Thea is charming.

Fia, like Terra and Horra, should only be used for over 12s after 9pm.

ILookedintheWater · 24/05/2017 15:59

I do know Mia, Tia, Clea though.

twobarnsmammisonthebus · 24/05/2017 15:59

Fia is a lovely name, very popular in Sweden. Go for it!

Branleuse · 24/05/2017 16:08

I know a Fia. I think its a lovely name

FeedTheSharkAndItWillBite · 24/05/2017 16:13

I know a woman named Fiammetta nn Fia. She's really lovely :)

Fia is a great name imo.

OhUnpretentiousSpud · 27/05/2017 19:52

I really like how those two names sound, but I think Fia is a nono. It's just 'Fear when you hear it, obviously a negative thing! It's like calling your child 'Terra' or something.

How about Fiona, Flora, Pheobe etc? :)

MrsDustyBusty · 27/05/2017 20:02

It's just 'Fear when you hear it

Except when you hear it without an r that isn't there. Then it sounds nothing like fear.

OhUnpretentiousSpud · 27/05/2017 20:12

I think people who only see it written will possibly pronounce it 'Fear'. And of course, not everyone has the same accent so you can't guarantee the pronunciation will always sound like 'Fia" with no R

OhUnpretentiousSpud · 27/05/2017 20:14

Just thinking about it, whether 'r' sounds end up in things is quite unpredictable. My aunt, Fiona often has her name pronounced Fionurrr. Not always Fio-nah!

OkPedro · 28/05/2017 02:22

Fionurr 😥

Nicky2468 · 28/05/2017 02:27

If I'd hear Fia from someone I'd think they couldn't pronounce 'Th'! Thea is lovely

Nicky2468 · 28/05/2017 02:28

Or Fia as Fear. So a no from me.

SomeOtherFuckers · 28/05/2017 02:57

FIA alone is really chavvy , Thea is lovely

SomeOtherFuckers · 28/05/2017 03:00

Plus, my name is Sophia and I hate fia - phi is ok, soph is fine, fia is not

OkPedro · 28/05/2017 03:58

some you may hate being called fia as your name is Sophia but you had bothered to RTFT you'd realise Fia is an Irish name not a shortened version of Sophia

MeltingSnowflake · 28/05/2017 04:17

I know a little Thea, it's a lovely name. Fia makes me think of a Fiat - sorry!
