Alys

Posting on behalf of my dad who unfortunately doesn't have an MN account but wanted me to ask Grin
DstepM and DF are expecting a baby girl any day now. They live in London but dad is Welsh, DstepM is Polish.
They finally agreed on Alice but DF is adamant on the Welsh spelling 'Alys'.
What would you think if you met an Alys?

That they had at least one Welsh parent... I like it.

I'd expect her to have Welsh heritage/family connections. Lovely name.

Well we know one! DDs best friend and she's adorable. No idea if they have Welsh heritage or just liked the name. Did need telling it was spelt differently the first time but everyone knows now.

EmmaWoodlouse · 14/05/2017 22:06

It might actually be quite a good idea in their case, because any Polish relatives who don't speak much English would look at the spelling "Alys" and pronounce it pretty much as we pronounce Alice. The English spelling would be more confusing to them as a C is always pronounced "ts" in Polish.

Yika · 14/05/2017 22:08

Love it, knew one when I was growing up (not Welsh; don't know if she had Welsh connections) so it doesn't seem strange to me.

ScarlettFreestone · 14/05/2017 22:09

Lovely spelling.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 14/05/2017 22:09

I'd think she's Welsh or has Welsh connections.

Agree that the spelling works admirably well in both Welsh and Polish.

Sophronia · 14/05/2017 22:37

It's lovely. Alys was also a variant of Alice in England in medieval times.

bridgetreilly · 14/05/2017 22:40

I think if you're not Welsh it can look a bit pretentious, but since the father is Welsh, that's perfectly fine.

DramaAlpaca · 15/05/2017 00:25

I love the spelling Alys, beautiful name.

QuietNameChange · 15/05/2017 09:17

Lovely name, lovely spelling.
Great name imo :)

Dixiestamp · 15/05/2017 09:21

Lovely! I have a cousin called this that lives in England but her dad is Welsh. Oddly, though, DS has a girl in his class in school who spells her name like this but pronounces it Elise (we're in Wales!).

onalongsabbatical · 15/05/2017 09:23

I'd think - what a pretty name, I like it spelt like that!
Lovely.

MiniMaxi · 15/05/2017 09:24

Lovely!

RubertRoo · 15/05/2017 10:04

I knew an Alys but it was pronounced Aleese or Elise.
She used to get really annoyed if people called her Alice - so I tend to read it as I used to pronounce hers.

Really pretty name though and like the Alice pronunciation.

welshnotyooneek · 15/05/2017 10:16

Ahh all round good feedback, thank you!
I guess if it's pronounced Elise by some, she can just show them they're wrong via google Grin
It needing to be easy to pronounce in Polish was quite a big criteria for them, and I think DstepM used it to her advantage to throw out Myfanwy and Gwladys.

Gorgeous!

BelafonteRavenclaw · 15/05/2017 19:45

I love it. We live in Wales and we had it on the list for both of my pregnancies. We had 2 boys so I've yet to use it. It's a beautiful name IMO.

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/05/2017 22:52

Lovely name

Joeybee · 15/05/2017 23:24

As the father is Welsh, I think Alys is fine. However she will have to constantly spell out her name, as most people would assume it's spelt 'Alice'.

AbernathysFringe · 16/05/2017 00:15

I didn't know it was Welsh and assumed Game of Thrones! When I read it in the books I thought, hmm, that makes me like the name (never liked Alice).

Dixiestamp · 16/05/2017 07:50

It's funny, isn't it- I love Alys if it's spelt like that, but not a fan of Alice at all!

Carbon · 16/05/2017 09:35

Alys is a lovely name and I like this spelling.

harderandharder2breathe · 16/05/2017 11:30

I know two but I live in Wales, one pronounced the same as Alice, the other Ay-liss

It's a lovely name, I prefer to to Alice
