Slightly unusual boys names with great nicknames?

Hello, we have a son Raphael, known as Raffy or Rafe. We chose the name partly because we loved all the different nicknames.
If the next baby is a boy, I'm really having trouble thinking of any names.
I'd like something else a little unusual but doesn't have to be incredibly rare. And a good nickname (but not a very common one like Nick, Ben, Ali, Ed).
Names I might quite like are Rowan, Tristan, Leander, Griffin if that gives an idea of style.
Bonus points if it's Hebrew or Irish in origin.
Thank you!

Cornelius is popular in parts of Ireland.
Of the 3 I know they go by Corny (I know), Naily (sp?) and Conn (I like this)

Marius

Forgot to add - nn would be Mars

Berrybakecake1 · 12/05/2017 07:14

Gabriel - Gabe
goes great with Raphael -Rafe.

Rudyard/Rudy

Some solid gold suggestions here thank you! Jasper/Jaz I hadn't thought of. I really like Barnaby but Barney would not sound good with hus surname.

Malachy/Malachi is great although my husband has a cousin with that name. He does have a lot of cousins and we don't see him, do you think we could still use it?
Jeremy/Jem is nice. Mulling over whether Corbyn puts me off at all.
Love Caspian but perhaps slightly too Narnia... But maybe Cassian.
Leo is too much TMNT with Raphael, and I think I'll avoid Gabriel as an angel theme, although I like it.
Elias is good but there are a lot of Ellies about so an Eli could get confusing.

Patrick. Fab name. Loads of shortenings Irish. Sorted.Grin

megletthesecond · 12/05/2017 09:42

Aldrin. (Al).

Apparently it's an old English name but I love the space connection. Old and modern at the same time.

Lemondrop09 · 12/05/2017 12:47

Asa nn Ace

Lemondrop09 · 12/05/2017 12:48

I also love Lysander which has a fair few poitentosl nicknames and goes well with Raffy

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 12/05/2017 14:39

Agree with BertandRussell, Patrick has some great nick names !

user1471547428 · 12/05/2017 14:45

Alban nn Albie?

GoodyGoodyGumdrops · 12/05/2017 15:06

Malachi
(can definitely use it even if there s already a cousin)
Benedict
(Hebrew = Baruch)
Jolyon
(the nicest character in The Forsyte Saga)

ineedamoreadultieradult · 12/05/2017 15:10

What about Asa? No nickname needed but I suppose you could use Ace as a nickname.

BertrandRussell · 12/05/2017 15:21

My Patrick has been Pat, Patch, Trick, Rick and Patrick over the years and to different people. Never Paddy-his grandfather, who he was named after was sensitive about it. But all the others. And also a baby mispronouciation which is too outing to tell.

crunched · 12/05/2017 15:26

Jethro - known as Jett

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 12/05/2017 16:54

I love Albus, shortened to Albie. Just need to get past the Harry Potter reference...

autumnkate · 12/05/2017 17:06

I have a Cormac nn Mac?

Or what about Sol or Sonny from Solomon? Love that, blinking DH

user1471547428 · 12/05/2017 17:13

I do find it a bit hard to get past my view of Abraham or Solomon as old bearded patriarchs. Need to meet someone to change my perception.
Patch and Trick are cool for Patrick.
Lochlan (Lachlan?) with Locke as a short form is also nice. Is one spelling Scottish? We have a Scottish connection too.
Lots of fairly close Irish relatives rule out many Irish names unfortunately.

Odhran / Orin / Oren - is Irish or a Hebrew depending on spelling.

Eben

Phelan

autumnkate · 12/05/2017 17:15

What about Oisin? Love Oshy.

user1471547428 · 12/05/2017 17:17

Like Alban and Albus but for no reason at all I really don't like Albie.
Actually Arran is cool in spite of lack of nickname potential.

I'm not really narrowing things down here but I still have six months to obsess over names so I think that's ok.
