Following on from a previous post. What do people think of Sunny as a nickname for Susanna. I know someone in Holland with it and thought it was really nice

Lovely

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 06/05/2017 19:26

CUTE

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/05/2017 19:26

Horrible

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 06/05/2017 19:27

Horrible. Also don't nicknames just evolve? How can you announce one at birth.

MommaGee · 06/05/2017 19:27

I'm not keen on Sunny or Susannah but you can nickname your child whatever you like. Might wait and check their disposition first

Astro55 · 06/05/2017 19:28

It's not a nick name - they evolve -

It's horrible - it's what grown men call little boys

MommaGee · 06/05/2017 19:29

gobbol I think its reasonable to decide if and to what you're shortening a chikds name. If I had a Victoria she'd be Tori or Ria not Vicki. When I told people if they said aw Vicki I'd correct them

villainousbroodmare · 06/05/2017 19:30

I think it's cute, but I agree that nicknames tend to evolve and I'm surprised at the extent to which MNetters seem to think they can plan them.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 06/05/2017 19:33

But surely most adults don't shorten your child's name unilaterally? Nicknames tend to evolve at school with the general agreement of the child.

I have a James who is only 4. No one has unilaterally decided to call him Jamie. If he decided later on that he wanted to be called that, that's fine but I wouldn't unilaterally impose a nickname on him. The same with my two younger children. Particularly not one that is not really very nice and likely to cause them to be teased at school

Astro55 · 06/05/2017 19:35

I think its reasonable to decide if and to what you're shortening a chikds name.

That's different to a nick name - they aren't the same thing

MommaGee · 06/05/2017 19:37

Nickname / chosen shortened preference - does it really matter what you call it?
My son was less than a day old before were shortened his name and as such that's what he's called as often as the long version.
Of OP says this is Susanna then refers to her Sunny people will generally pick it up. Some will still insist on Susanna or Susie etc and at school it'll be god only knows what but knowing what you want your child to be known by isn't so weird

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 06/05/2017 19:37

pfffft

we gave our daughter a long, proper name with the intention of shortening it- mind you, it was a much more standard shortening

two syllables is better than three- especially for a littlun to pronounce. She won't be able to say Susannah till she's big- Sunny will be a lot easier

CarlyBear · 06/05/2017 19:45

I don't see Sunny as a natural NN for Susanna tbh. It seems a bit forced.

FreeNiki · 06/05/2017 19:52

I know a female Sunny but it is short for Sunvir.

Susie is the default nn for Susannah. People are unlikely to call her Sunny unless you instruct them to but why not call her Susannah?

2014newme · 06/05/2017 19:53

Dreadful

ENFJ · 06/05/2017 19:53

I like it! I prefer Susie but Sunny from Susannah is ok

LobsterMac · 06/05/2017 19:56

My Susanna is a Zanna!

Frankiefarr · 06/05/2017 20:05

Zanna is lovely

OP posts:
Frankiefarr · 06/05/2017 20:06

Very common short form of Susanna in Holland apparently

Makes me think of the least Empress of Russia, Alexandra. I think her nn was Sunny 🤓.

Aaaaaanyway, it's ok. I prefer Suzy though.

ChippersAndRunt · 06/05/2017 20:07

Why not? It's adorable.

But remember... She may not stay Sunny. She may become Sunners. Or Suki, Susie, Zaza or something entirely different.

Rockaby · 06/05/2017 20:07

I like Zanna too.

Gallavich · 06/05/2017 20:08

Sunny isn't short for susannah. It just isn't.

Rockaby · 06/05/2017 20:09

And that should have said last Empress of Russia.

SuperBeagle · 06/05/2017 20:12

People will still call her Susie. You won't be able to avoid it.

I like Sunny on its own, like in A Series of Unfortunate Events. I can't see it sticking long term as a shortening of Susannah.
