We love the name Roisin (pronounce Ro - sheen). Would like to use my late MIL's name 'Rita' as a middle name but I don't think it goes. So looking at variations but not got on Margaret either.

Would love some thoughts on:

Roisin Rita
Roisin Margaret
Roisin Marita

OH doesn't really mind if we don't use his mum's name (though I think it would be nice if we did)

If not I'm thinking:

Roisin Orla

Our surname is short so I think a longer middle name sounds better.

Rita is a derivative of Margarita, meaning pearl - how about Roisin Pearl Surname? I think that scans nicely

Alternatively, find another second name to go in between - Roisin XX Rita Surname, to break up the difficult alliteration

I second Róisín Mairéad. It's Irish for Margaret.

Or alternatively, Róisín Marit (Norwegian and Swedish 'Margaret'). The Marit I know pronounces it MAH-rit. Not a flat A sound.

Fwiw, my DD's name ends in A and her middle name starts with A. It sounds dreadful together, but we never say them together so it's not a big deal. We chose it because it was my late mum's name. She died unexpectedly, exactly one year to the exact date, before DD was born! If I'd had my way, we would have put another name in between, but it was actually DH who really wanted to just have my mum's name and his suggestion we use it at all. It is a more obvious tribute, so I'm glad we did it.

We spent ages thinking about a similar issue.. but ended up thinking that they'll never really use their middle name (I'm sure I've only ever said my full name when I got married). So doesn't matter how it flows?

Thank you for all your suggestions. I appreciate all your thoughts.

One thing that has niggled me is that by using my MIL's name as a middle name and then we have her surname too, it kind of feels like you're only saying Roisin and then my MIL's name... I liked my MIL and maybe its something we'd get used to. Does that make sense?! So that was what got me onto using Marita as an alternative (and meant there wasn't two 'R' s together.

Any thoughts on Orla as a completely unrelated alternative middle name?

By the way I thought Mairéad was a great alternative too but OH says he went to school with someone with that name and he couldn't stand her so won't even entertain the idea!!

Love that other people have the shouting up the stairs test. I thought that was just us.

Roisin Orla is lovely!

What was MIL's maiden name (assuming that's she changed it, of course)? Could that make a middle name?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 06/05/2017 17:06

❤️ Roisin Orla.
