Well, I like the name Zara, so if it's pronounced the same then it's a yes from me.

I've never seen it spelled "Czarah" before: what's the origin?
Is it relevant to your heritage, perhaps?

OlennasWimple · 05/05/2017 02:15

Why not jsut go with Zara or Zarah rather than give your DD a life time of having to explain how to pronounce her name?

WanderingTrolley1 · 05/05/2017 02:16

I think the vast majority of people will have no idea how to pronounce it.

sycamore54321 · 05/05/2017 02:21

I'd guess lots of people would think it pronounced Schara - the only other example most Anglophones have for Cz at the start of the word is Czech.

Sara and Zara are both lovely and not hugely popular - why would you mangle the spelling like that? What is the origin of this spelling?

sycamore54321 · 05/05/2017 02:22

Typo - I meant pronounced like Tchara.

Scrumpernickel · 05/05/2017 02:23

Daft. I saw a baby on TV once called Kaiser and thought his parents were stark staring bonkers. I'd think the same about Czarah's parents.

Zara is perfectly nice though.

TheNumberfaker · 05/05/2017 02:25

Completely daft

dillytilly · 05/05/2017 02:39

DH is Russian and his grandmother's nickname was Czarina ( pronounced zar-ree-na), but we also really liked the name Zara. So I tried to combine the two, but I think you're all right, it would probably be a nightmare to spell and it is a bit daft! May stick with Zara! Still undecided about using a Russian first name as there are so many choices, goodness girls names are so difficult! Thank you all x

I can only assume she was an imposing matriarch if her nickname was Czarina!

It reminds me of Frank Butcher referring to Peggy as Duchess in Eastenders 😅

SuperBeagle · 05/05/2017 02:53

Czarina/Tsarina is the equivalent of Queen, so that's a bit naff.

Zara is nice though.

dillytilly · 05/05/2017 02:56

That's exactly the case! Apparently very stern and a bit of a snob 😂 I thought it was such a pretty name, maybe I'll stick to Zara and use it as her nickname if she displays the same traits 😅

Ah! I'd guessed maybe Polish/ Russian/ Eastern European origin.

I do love Anastasia, Natasha and Lara (or Larissa) for girls' names, if any appeal to you?

But, as mentioned in my previous post, Zara's nice as well... Smile

Scrumpernickel · 05/05/2017 03:08

I think that's a great idea. Zara as her actual name and Czarina as a family nickname for her more high maintenance moments 😄

fiftyplustwo · 05/05/2017 04:25

Why not Sarah Czarina Lastname in that case?

fiftyplustwo · 05/05/2017 04:28

What was Czarina the nickname for? Anastasia? In that case better with Sarah Anastasia Lastname. (I thought perhaps Czarina was a "proper" name but reading on I see it wasn't, have no clue or knowledge whatsoever of Russian names or how they use or construct them, and now I feel a bit daft that I thought "Czarina" was a name, like "Carina" for instance.)

SuperBeagle · 05/05/2017 04:54

fifty Czarina/Tsarina (alternative spellings) isn't a nickname. It's a title. It's the equivalent of Queen. So the last Tsarina was Alexandra, of the Romanov dynasty.

sxround · 05/05/2017 06:54

If it reflects your heritage, then cool. Otherwise maybe a touch strange?
Either way you and only you has a right to judge.

bigchris · 05/05/2017 06:57

I love Czarina for a middle name

Sophronia · 05/05/2017 10:56

Scrumpernickel I know a Kaiser-Alexander! Grin

Scrumpernickel · 05/05/2017 11:17

Oh my word! What are his siblings called Emperor Thomas and Grand Duke James? 😆

Chaotica · 05/05/2017 11:25

If you use it, I'd use the more common English transliteration of the letter 'ts' in Russian and spell it Tsara. Then at least we'll know how to pronounce it.
