We are all here, agonising, debating, pondering....

Trying to come up with a name we love whether it's classic or unique....

Yet we all have or will have the most common name ever to our kids!!! Mummy/mum (mostly, appreciate there will be some dads grandparents etc on here)

Not sure why this popped into my mind!

If you won't be called Mummy or Mum or the usual please share Grin

I'm considering Mama but not sure if it'll make us sound posh 😂

PandaCat · 03/05/2017 21:14

I have a child and I thought I would be 'Mammy' or 'Mam' as we are from Wales but to my surprise I am Mummy 99% of the time.

QuietNameChange · 03/05/2017 21:20

I absolutely refuse to be called mum.

Mama is fine (that's actually what I still call my own mother) and mummy is perfectly fine as well. Or my first name. Or a nickname... Or mater, momma, mumsie...

But not mum. I honestly don't why I have this weird aversion to the mere idea of being called "mum".

Cerberusia · 03/05/2017 21:22

I'm Mama. I didn't have any strong thoughts either way but that's what DD called me when she first started talking and it's stuck.

MagnumAddict · 03/05/2017 21:25

I loved Mama! With DS I was mama until he was about 14 months but now I'm mummy. I was a but sad to lose it as felt like it was because he was growing up! Think I'll feel the same when it goes from mummy to mum

quietnamechange that's funny the only thing I'd hate to be called by my kids is my first name. I don't know why but that thought makes me so sad. I like all your other alternatives though

I guess it all depends on personal preference.

But I must admit, my first name wouldn't be my first choice either...

PandaCat · 03/05/2017 21:50

I hate mum too! My dd sometimes calls me it or writes it down and I tell her who is mum? That's not me? And she laughs and says it again I pretend to ignore her until she says mummy. She finds it funny.

MagnumAddict · 03/05/2017 21:56

Haha how old is your daughter pandacat?

I think a lot of times it's just what peers call their parents although it must be regional too as some people manage to make mummy last!

Absolutely hate 'mum'. I like my name and that's what I go by. Delighted to be DS's mammy however.
MIL is called Mom by DH and FIL, and Marianne (oddly awkwardly) by me when addressing her, but "your mom" when I speak about her to DH. It's horrible to lose your name to all the people closest to you, in my opinion.

Cagliostro · 03/05/2017 21:59

I was bubby until DS was nearly 4 - he had a speech disorder and couldn't say mummy. I was so proud when he first said mummy but really sad too TBH!

summerisleair · 03/05/2017 21:59

I'm not keen on mum or mummy or (worse of the lot IMO) mam or mammy. I prefer first name and try to gently encourage use of it.

QuietNameChange · 03/05/2017 21:59

villain

DH often uses my surname or a nickname of mine.... I do hope DD won't start copying DH and use my surname as well. :=0

BlueEyeGreenEye · 03/05/2017 22:05

I'm an adult and have always called my mum mumma 😂

PandaCat · 03/05/2017 22:22

She is 5. I guess because I'm in Wales I expected mammy or mam not mummy and mum. I don't mind mummy just hate mum. Her friends call there mothers mammy or mam.

PandaCat · 03/05/2017 22:25

*their haha. She calls me mummy 90% of the time though. I'll try and hold on to it for as long has possible!

QuietNameChange · 03/05/2017 22:25

Panda

Maybe from TV (if you have one/she's allowed to watch)? A teacher?

I'm still hoping DD won't end up using my surname (well, my maiden name, actually). I think I need to talk with DH, maybe he should stop using it infront of DD...

PandaCat · 03/05/2017 22:32

Teachers say mam/mammy too! I honestly can't remember how I became mummy when almost everyone around her says mam/mammy. She used to say 'me' for me when she first started talking, it was so cute!

QuietNameChange · 03/05/2017 22:35

Aww! "me" is just adorable! Easter Smile I wonder if that's the right smiley for this occasion...

PandaCat · 03/05/2017 22:40

We were "me and dee" instead of mummy and daddy. That seems like so long ago now! I wonder what our next (when we have one) will call us.

Heratnumber7 · 03/05/2017 22:55

My DDs call me mumma, even now when they're all grown up. I love it.

MyWhatICallNameChange · 03/05/2017 23:24

My youngest called me Little Bear until he was around 4. He was later diagnosed with autism, so I think he didn't understand what to call me, so copied what I called him. I'm mum now though.

GreatFuckability · 05/05/2017 00:14

I'm Mami. or Mama to the 9 year old.

my own mother has always been Moth.

Mclaren37 · 05/05/2017 04:23

My kids were born in California and they picked up Mama. The youngest has converted to mum now we're back in the UK and it still sounds a bit odd. Even though my own was/is always 'mum'.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 05/05/2017 05:29

I'm not a mother myself, but here are a few nice alternatives used by friends' littlest ones:

  • "M" (sounds a bit James Bond, mind you!).
  • "Mimi" (plus Grandma has now become "Big Mimi").
  • "Mammina" (Italian ancestry, but sweet for anyone to use).

(Family legend has it that at age 8ish, having read "Little Women", I had a phase of driving my own Mum mad by calling her "Marmee" in a bad American accent...). Blush
