I don't know if that makes sense but names like Fern, Rose, Rowan, Robin, Violet, Scarlet, Lily, Faye, etc.

Names that have that feel please!

IF, IF, IF you believe all the neo-pagan stuff, Beltane is a GOD. He's masculine, very masculine. www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/paganism/holydays/beltane_1.shtml

Surely not a name for a girl? I'd hate to be named after what is now an historically rather iffy fertility festival.

Being more historical, Beltane was a very important 'turning point' in the year for cattle farmers. Traditionally, people in many rural Scottish/Irish/Welsh regions measure their wealth in cattle. That's all really interesting , but to me it doesn't suggest a name for a girl.

Also historically speaking, Beltane/May Day was a celebration of new life and growth, but this was traditionally seen to be dangerous as well as energising; in many parts of the UK, including Highland Scotland (family tradition) one did NOT bring May Day greenery indoors. It was linked to the supernatural and therefore dangerous.

How fascinating! are may greens the flowers on a may pole?

When I was little during the midsummer celebration we used to make wreaths of the flowers used for the tree and put them under our pillows. Apparently (according to grandma) they'd allow us to dream of our future husbands... (Actually, I think I'd feel somewhat creepy telling DD to do this... But back then it was great fun.)

I'd really be tempted to use Walburga or Walpurga as a middle name if I had a DD that was born on the 30th, tbh...
Plus, there's also a saint with that name (would be the explanation I'd use if one of my Catholic relatives asked me about that name choice).

PP who claims Beltane is a god. You are wrong. Beltane is the festival. Please re read your link.

Today Pagans believe that at Beltane the God (to whom the Goddess gave birth at the Winter Solstice) achieves the strength and maturity to court and become lover to the Goddess. So although what happens in the fields has lost its significance for most Pagans today, the creation of fertility is still an important issue.

I'm Pagan Wink

Aine is a queen of the fairies in Irish, and as far as I recall Sadhbh is a fairy-related name as well (pronounced Awn-nye and Sive to rhyme with 5).

But Irish fairies are not pretty, magical things; they are vindictive and nasty who put curses on people and switch babies in their cradles, so maybe not the kind of fairies you were looking for!

florascotianew · 02/05/2017 20:03

The god celebrated at Beltane was Belenus; the names have the same root 'Bel' and the same masculine sun-derived 'force'. Beltane = bright fire; Belenus = 'the shining one'.

Your faith, your choice. But it is a very masculine festival in origin.

The sort of folklore I grew up with was similar to sycamore's. Meddle with 'fairies' at your peril.

Feed the shark - I think those sort of traditions, although very pretty and charming in later centuries - reflect the same fear of 'Nature' forces that sycamore mentions.

Yes, I agree. Especially the winter solstice celebrations etc (I went to a Waldorfschool and therefore had a lot of contact with "Pagan Stuff"). But today I think they're really lovely and enrichening.

Plus, I loved Lucia, midsommer, may celebrations, harvest festivals and all that good stuff ;)

Anyhow, back to names...

What about gemstone names? They are nature names and (if you're into that stuff) do have some properties according to some people (not sure if that satisfies the "magical" part, tbh).

Pearl
Greta
Amber
Emeraude
Morganite
Jade
Coral(ie)
Saphire
Lazuli
Topaz

And doesn't Ula mean gem of the sea or something like that?
