We are trying to narrow the list of names for our baby girl.

The names we like so far are:

Amelia
Isabelle
Isabella
Sophia
Elle
Georgia
Abigail
Darcey
Caitlin
Eva

Surname is Oakley
We want a girly name which also grows with her as she gets older.
Please share opinions on your faves?

they are all really popular, did you want a popular name?

MadameJosephine · 01/05/2017 20:16

My favourites from your list are Abigail and Amelia, they are also probably a bit less popular than some of the others (you can't get stirred for girls called Sophia or Isabella around here)

How about Annabel or Annalise?

user1492722135 · 01/05/2017 20:17

We have gone for popular names as I have a unique name and hated always having to spell it out or answer questions about it. People love to point out unusual names!

Caitlin is my favourite from your list. Sorry but I find the other names a bit dull because they are all so overused.

HappyGirl86 · 01/05/2017 20:18

I like Georgia because it's not as popular as the others and it sounds lovely with the surname. Such a pretty name.

WankersHacksandThieves · 01/05/2017 20:21

Hmm, don't think you can have anything with Ann in it unless you get her a cowboy hat (Annie Oakley) :)

If you are not worried about popularity, I'd cut it down to:

Amelia
Isabelle
Abigail

These sound the best with the surname imo.

DramaAlpaca · 01/05/2017 20:27

OK, because your surname starts with a vowel and ends in -ey I'd personally discard any names that end in an -a or -y sound.

So that leaves Isabelle, Caitlin, Elle or Abigail.

From those my favourites are Caitlin and Abigail.

Lilly16 · 01/05/2017 20:31

I like
Isabelle
Caitlin
Georgia
Darcy
Sophia

:)

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 01/05/2017 20:35

From your list, Abigail is my favourite.
Rosanna Oakley
Isobel Oakley
Maria Oakley
Fern Oakley
Sienna Oakley

Firsttimemama2017 · 01/05/2017 20:40

Don't go for Isabelle if you don't want her you to have to spell it out all the time. My daughter is Isobel and because of the various ways it can be spelt people always ask! It's a lovely name though!

Rockaby · 01/05/2017 20:40

I like Abigail, Caitlin and Sophia best. I don't think they're that popular. Not where I live anyway.

Amelia, Isabelle and Isabella are very well used where I am, which has actually put me off the names a little bit. They are pretty names though.

I'm not keen on Georgia, Darcey or Eva as I just don't like the sound of them. I do really like Eve though.

Loola24 · 02/05/2017 11:38

I think Sophia sounds the best with your surname but my favourite name on your list is Georgia.

Caitlin, Darcey and Abigail are my least favourite

Lemonnaise · 02/05/2017 11:47

Caitlin or Sophia are my favs.

SirNiallDementia · 02/05/2017 11:51

Caitlin is my favourite from your list and probably the least common as well.

halcyondays · 02/05/2017 11:51

I like Darcey and Caitlin and they go well with your surname.

RockinHippy · 02/05/2017 11:57

I think it's such a shame that you are shying away from more unusual names because of your own experience with spelling your name. It's documented that more unusual names will help her stand out & be more memorable, which will be a plus when she is grown & looking for work etc. My name is uncommon & I chose the same for DD as it's been a good thing, not bad.

Why not go for an unusual name with a more simple spelling ??

Out of the list you have, I agree with the comments on vowels & ys, so only Abigail, Caitlin & Elle would really work, though Sophia maybe. Elle is too plain & I can see the Ello playground jibes. Abbie Oakley sounds too much like Annie, which leaves Caitlin, Caity/Katy/Cait sounds okay too

Rockaby · 02/05/2017 12:09

That's really interesting Rockinhippy! Are you able to link to that at all? I'm genuinely interested, as IME people with name as people don't quite get (because they've never heard the name previously) are always forgotten "oh what's her name again... something beginning with A... it's a bit like Alice but not...". I do like unusual names though, so it is a shame people aren't more interested in bothering to learn them properly!

Rockaby · 02/05/2017 12:10

*names people don't quite get

Pardonwhatnow · 02/05/2017 12:14

Just to say I have a REALLY popular first name (for people my age) but there are more than one spelling so I still have to spell it out all the time, and my surname, and my house name, road name, the name of my business, and the name of the town we live in

ACatCalledFang · 02/05/2017 12:26

I would avoid Elle, Caitlin (although I really like it) and Darcey as I don't think they work as well with your surname.

I love Isabella and Amelia, and Abigail is beautiful (and goes well with your surname). Out of the ones on your list, I'd probably pick Abigail, although Georgia goes well too.

How about Charlotte? That goes well with your surname and is unlikely to be spelled wrong. Other ideas:

Erin
Cara
Lara
Rebecca
Victoria
Hannah
Susannah
Miranda
Carina
Gabrielle
Florence
Juliet

RockinHippy · 02/05/2017 13:31

Rockaby I'm afraid not, a quick google seems to say the opposite Confused though the unusual names they cite, such as Chardonnay don't really give a full picture, so I'm not so sure

I definitely read it as an article years ago & it rang true with me, my full name is unusual, but not the abbreviated version which I tend to use with friends. I've always used my full name with officialdom & work & people always remember it, which is useful in interviews, meetings etc.

DD has a simple more unusual name & it certainly hasn't put her bottom of the class as the article I've just glanced over suggests, quite the opposite. She is one of only 2 in her large high school & as a result everyone knows her name, which seems to help if she wants to be included in things

Rockaby · 02/05/2017 14:00

Ah no worries rockinhippy! Thanks for checking. Will have a look myself later. I'm sure it's slightly dependent on the name.

BertrandRussell · 02/05/2017 14:16

You need to be careful about this "oh, it's so common!" Idea too. I picked some of your names at random and checked. The most popular is Sophia, with 2744 born in the UK last year. Even that means that only 1 in about 110 little girls is called Sophia. 1 in 265 would be Abigail, and 1 in 257 would be Georgia. So hardly crowds in every reception class! And 1 in 882 would be Caitlin.

harderandharder2breathe · 02/05/2017 15:28

Nothing wrong with popular names! Those are all popular because they're really lovely!

I like Georgia and Amelia best

Agree that Isabelle will end up spelling it out, if that's something you what to avoid

I like Abigail best from your list
