We are Dutch but would like to know opinions on the name for use in the UK.

Thank you!

It's a bit too much name for me, sorry. Would you shorten it at all? I do like Marcus or Marius so maybe I just need to get used to Martinus - it's not one I've heard before.

WorryLessCherishEveryDay · 01/05/2017 18:07

I like it

MrsLettuce · 01/05/2017 18:44

British people will read it as Martin-us rather than Maar-teen-us, unfortunately.

There are some really annoying issues with pronounciation when naming across Dutch and English. Drove me potty naming my DC.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 01/05/2017 19:27

I read it as it is meant to sound, however Martin, isn't a popular name at present. I like it OP.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 01/05/2017 20:02

I like it it. I know one although he's usually known as Martin. I've heard Tinus used as a cute nickname in Dutch speaking countries but in England it's far to close to Penis for school kids to resist.

If you think he is going to grow up here then I honestly think he would prefer a very standy-out as being different name, from a different culture. This is from my personal experience. Can he be called Martin? Even though that isn't so popular here now.

upwardsandonwards33 · 01/05/2017 20:10

I mean he would not prefer a very different name in my opinion

MiniMaxi · 01/05/2017 20:31

I like it! You could of course just use Martin which is more familiar here - or just Martin as nickname

pipilangstrumpf · 01/05/2017 22:12

Why wouldn't he? Martinus is great and much more interesting than Martin.

ChippersAndRunt · 06/05/2017 15:37

It's very nice!

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 07/05/2017 07:20

It sounds a strong, leader of men, Roman Gladiator sort of a name!
(Maximus, Marcus...).

I like it. Go for it.

CatCircle · 07/05/2017 07:26

I really like the look of it but wouldn't be sure how to pronounce as PP have said. Is it 'teen' or 'tin' - the latter would be instinctive to me in English. I'd ask the child/adult how they wanted me to pronounce it, which they might or might find annoying.

CatCircle · 07/05/2017 07:26

Or might not, I meant!

29Palms · 07/05/2017 14:13

As you are Dutch I think it's fine. He can always go by Martin in the UK if pronunciation is a problem.
