We're expecting DD2 in 9 weeks and still haven't settled on a name. It's upsetting me a little as we had the name finalised for DD1 (Lila) for months!

We have a shortlist but nothing 'feels right' (or maybe I'm overthinking it). I have listed the names below along with my concerns for each.

Elodie- DH's favourite and I like but think this is too long to say repeatedly, would likely be shortened to nn Edie, but is that too contrived?
Lottie- Is this too nickname'y? And is it too popular if Charlottes are often shortened to Lottie?
Edie- again, too nickname'y?
Ivy- too popular?
Mira (Meer-a)- does it sound like Mirror? Also, cousin called Mila- too close?
Lois

Thank you! :)

I really like Lottie. It is a bit nickname-y, yes, but it's still really lovely! :) What about Lotta, Lotte or Carlotta?

I really like Mira (Meera). DH vetoed it because it reminded him of Myra... But I don't think Mila is too close, no.

YoumeandlittleP · 30/04/2017 11:57

Elodie is a beautiful name! You have some lovely choices there.

Nametrekking · 30/04/2017 12:02

Thank you, finding it so much harder this time- and we haven't even started on middle names yet!
Thanks for the suggestions, I like the spelling Lotte- is that pronounced the same as Lottie?
I don't think Myra would be an issue because we live in Australia!

I really like Mira. Years ago my dd went to primary school with a lovely girl called Mira and no one ever pronounced it as mirror.

I also like Elodie.

Nametrecking

The pronunciation of "Lotte"? Well... If I pronounce it the German way (my first language) then no, it's different. But just the ending... Not sure about and English pronunciation, sorry...

That's apparently the English one, which does sound like "Lottie":

And here some international pronunciations.

I like Elodie best with Lila as I don't like siblings having names starting with the same letter...

I do like Lottie as a nn.for Charlotte though..

I would pronounce Lotte (Lot-uh)...

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 30/04/2017 13:15

Lila and Elodie (Edie).

Sophronia · 30/04/2017 13:20

I like Mira and Lois best.

harderandharder2breathe · 30/04/2017 14:24

I know sisters called Lila and Mira, I think those go well together

I also love Elodie

Nametrekking · 30/04/2017 23:02

Thank you!
Seems like Elodie is the popular choice! Do you think it will inevitably become Ellie? I much prefer Edie as a nn

I like Elodie, but vastly prefer Eloise. I don't know if Elodie would realistically get shortened to Edie; it'd be more likely to be Elle. Edie is well accepted as standalone name or a nickname for Edith.

I love Lottie. I like Charlotte too, but prefer Lottie as it seems a bit less popular at the moment. Most Charlottes I know get Char ("shar") or Charlie for short. Actually, I don't know any who get Lottie.

Love Edie. I don't think it's too nicknamey at all. Edie Sedgwick only ever went by Edie, though she was formally Edith.

Love Ivy. Very popular where I live (no. 16 in NSW, Aus in 2016). That was the off putting factor for me, because I loved it for my own DD otherwise.

Mira (Meer-a)- does it sound like Mirror? Also, cousin called Mila - It is very close to Mila if you're concerned about that, but my bigger concern would be that it may be pronounced like Myra, which still has very negative connotations.

I'm not a fan of Lois. It makes me think of Family Guy and Malcolm in the Middle, so it seems very outdated to me, like it would only belong on a middle-aged woman.

Nametrekking · 01/05/2017 06:59

Whoa thank you for such a long message!

We are in NSW too and that's precisely the reason I'm hesitant about Ivy, not that I mean to be snobby but just don't want her to be one of several in a school class. It's hard to have to take into account the UK and Australia rankings, along with differing pronunciations! Do you think the link to Myra is a concern in Australia?

Being shortened to Ellie was my concern about Elodie, I definitely prefer nn Edie so maybe Edie in itself would be the answer.

Thank you!

I have an Elodie! She's two and only known as Elodie so far... am thinking it is likely to be shortened to elle or maybe Ella. I'll be the annoying mother who will always calls her by her full name!

Edie... like! Yes it's nicknamey but I do think it also works well as a name in its own right for a child and adult. I use a niece called Eden nn edie

Meera like but I can't get the character out of postman pat out my head.. it the way the others say meeeeeera

Lottie... one of my favs but I think it is nn really but I really like it.

Ivy ... pretty

Redpramlady · 01/05/2017 07:49

I don't think Elodie is automatically shortened btw by people around her (found this so far) think a big part off nn is how you as parents choose to shorten it should you choose to. She will find her own preference eventually.

Hellobye · 01/05/2017 07:51

Lovely names.

Not keen on Ivy though and Mira I would have pronounced as Myra if I didn't know.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 01/05/2017 08:28

I think if you call her Edie from the start, people will follow suit. If she does get Ellie, just say, it's Edie. I really don't think that you'll have a problem. One of my Sons is called Joseph, always Joss, nobody calls him Joe.
