Alexander, Sebastian or Henry?

Babybell7 · 29/04/2017 19:48

My DH and I really can't decide which one we like the best, our favourites change daily. So opinions would be appreciated. Please keep them helpful though, rather than just "I hate them" as we will be choosing one of these names.
How do you picture children/men with these names? Do they sound strong, smart?

Alexander
Sebastian
Henry

Middle name will be Ridley or possibly Rupert Ridley if it sounds better with two middle names. Surname is one syllable.

Thank you.

Sebastian

n0ne · 30/04/2017 20:21

Know dozens of Alexes, boring. Love Sebastian!

FluffyBathTowel · 30/04/2017 20:23

Sebastian is my favourite and I love Seb as a nn

Babybell7 · 30/04/2017 20:42

Wow thank you so much for the replies!

I still love all the names for different reasons, naming a person is difficult.

Personally I love the names in all their glory. We would shorten Alexander to Xander rather than Alex, but use Alexander most of the time and the same with Sebastian. We would use the full name most of the time and Seb occasionally. That's the nice thing about Henry, it doesn't get shortened, but my worry was it's quite newly popular while still being classic (although all the Sebastian's I've known have gone by the full name apart from one who went by Baz).

Im just so worried about regretting our decision whichever we choose.

Alexander definitely, love Zander as a nickname or of course you can have Sandy (very popular in Scotland as a shortening of Alexander, especially for those with fairer hair Grin).

Sebastian is a bit public school try hard floppy hair 90s for me.

Henry is nice but just a teensy bit dull? Also doesn't go as well with Ridley middle name.

mum2be2boys · 30/04/2017 20:51

Lovely name choices! All three are strong names that I can picture on a baby and an adult (if that makes sense)

My favourite is Alexander, followed by Sebastian. Not so keen on Henry (purely because I was at school with one who wasn't very nice so it's tainted the name for me!)

Backhometothenorth · 30/04/2017 21:59

Sebastian is the boy equivalent of Florence I think- so popular but lovely nonetheless

I would have used Alexander had either of my two been boys

SuperBeagle · 30/04/2017 22:02

I love Henry. I have a 7mo relative named Henry and he's divine. He so suits the name.

I like Sebastian too, but there's debate over the pronunciation. I say it with three syllables: seh-bass-chen (kind of), but I know people who say it with four syllables: seh-bass-tee-enn. Depends if that sort of thing will bother you. It also doesn't have great nickname potential. Seb? Baz? Bastian?

I don't like Alexander.

Sebastian is the boy equivalent of Florence I think- so popular but lovely nonetheless

But Sebastian is the least popular of the 3 options.

Redpramlady · 01/05/2017 07:53

Alexander for me! Although I like them all!

Alexander, and Alex is nice as a nn.
All the Sebastian's I know get Seb which is ugly. Not keen on Henry.

Waterlemon · 01/05/2017 08:40

I think once you meet your little man, you will know.

They're all lovely names.

I have a henry, I also have another very traditional and popular named DS, (consistently top 5 name over the last 10 years or so) however I seem to come across far more Henrys than other DS name.

Sebastian also seams to be becoming very popular at the moment. I've noticed quite a few little Sebestians when I've been out and about recently. It's my cousins name and was pretty much unheard of when he was born in the 80's.

Alexander is also traditional and ageless, but not as "trendy" as the others.

The popularity of names doesn't bother me, but I know that's an important factor to some.

Just wait and see...

PirateQueenie · 01/05/2017 08:41

I love them all but think Alexander and Henry are pretty popular at the moment. Sebastian was on our list if we were having a boy :)

MrsEricBana · 01/05/2017 09:02

I like Sebastian the most, but as you mention one syllable surname you are definitely going to end up with a very short sounding name even if you and your dh insist on calling him Sebastian at home e.g. Seb Smith. So just check that works for you. With my dd we chose something like Elizabeth Mary Smith. Oh how pretty it sounded but to everyone else it's Liz Smith, IYSWIM!

Loola24 · 01/05/2017 13:18

1st - Alexander - zander or zannie
2nd - Sebastian - seb or sebby
3rd - Henry (very popular and gets hen or henners from the ones I know) as people do like to give children a nickname.

GertrudeBelle · 01/05/2017 13:21

Henry and Sebastian are the best. There are tonnes of kids called Alex and Alec sound here (and also girls called Alex/Alix too). V common these days.

FreeNiki · 02/05/2017 04:14

Henry doesnt work with the middle names. Too many R sounds.

Alexander is my favourite but I love Sebastian too.

17caterpillars1mouse · 02/05/2017 09:14

I like them all. Good shortlist :)

Alexander - I like that it can be shortened to Zander (not such a fan of Alex for a boy but most are).

Sebastian - I know two baby Sebastian's and it was on our own shortlist. Not really a fan of Seb though and not sure Bastian would catch on

Henry - I know loads of them but I still think it's great.

If my choice i'd go with Henry

Babybell7 · 02/05/2017 09:28

His nickname would be Xander not Alex.
I love Sebastian, but I don't think my DH is quite as sold on it so it will probably be between Alexander or Henry. Perhaps I'll have a little Sebastian in the future.
Popularity doesn't bother us too much, we tried to stay out of the top 10. I believe Henry is the most popular of the three at number 13 followed by Alexander at 22 and Sebastian at 35. Alexander seems to be the most consistently popular over time though.

Ridley is a family name so it has to be in there. Maybe a different name to Rupert would balance it out more? Although my husband adores Rupert and would use it as a first name given his way! And I quite like all the "R's"

OP posts:
FreeNiki · 02/05/2017 10:11

I meant saying all the Rs.

Henry with Ridley or Rupert makes the sounds Ree and Rid or Ree and Roop back to back.

Say Henry Ridley to yourself. It almost rhymes.

Nametrekking · 02/05/2017 10:32

Sebastian!

ifyouthinkiwillsleepyoudream · 02/05/2017 10:36

Looooooove Sebastian!

I'd have used it for DS happily but DH vetoed it
