Hamish - would you??

I've loved he name Hamish for ages, but now I have the chance to use it I'm having second thoughts. DH and I are both half Scottish and have some very Scottish names in our families. But day to day no one will know our son's family history and I'm worried that Hamish might be a bit OTT, or even a bit pretentious, on a little English boy in the south east... What do you think? Is it really a usable name? Would you use it?
(Back up names at this stage are Ralph, Gil, Hugo or good old Jack - but have loved Hamish the longest!).

I know a Hamish, it really suits him. I think the dad might be from Scotland but we live in England and mum is definitely English (work colleague hence my not being so sure about dads heritage).

It's an acceptable name here in Australia. I know several. Obviously none are Scottish (whether their heritage is or not is a different question).

But I wouldn't, because it's too hammy looking and our family friend's nickname is Ham. Not very nice. I think he gets Hay too.

I LOVE Hamish but I'd probably opt for Hugo, to be honest. I think very Scottish / Welsh /Irish names can look a little try-hard in England.

I don't like it at all but I absolutely think you can use it, especially with your Scottish roots. Not pretentious, I just don't like the sound!

I love it, and I really wanted it for DS, however DH vetoed.

I like it, not try hard at all , DS will be half Scottish and name is easy to pronounce and spell....

My hamster was named Hamish

I love it but then I am biased as I have one!. Neither of us is scots but there scots ancestry on the dads side. Mine has a distant relative in Australia who has the same name and I have met another Hamish locally. We live in southern England.

I love it - I think I would assume Scottish heritage fwiw.
Personally - and names are so personal aren't they - I would instantly find Ralph, Gil or Hugo more pretentious but once you meet the babies it doesn't matter because it's all about the baby not the name.

From your other suggestions I like Back best but also have a sort spot for Ralph. Gil looks unfinished to me

I know a lot of Hamishs, but do live in the north of Scotland. It's a very cute name and my second son was very nearly a Hamish.

My DS is a Hamish so I'm biased obviously, but I love the name! He gets lots of 'ham' nicknames which you might not like (Hamster being one!) and gets Mish sometimes too.

I'm not Scottish (DH is) but we live in Scotland so my Hamish is Scottish and will have a Scottish accent when he can talk. To be fair, I may not have used the name if we didn't, it's not pretentious to use it though.

Go for it! If you have Scottish links then it's not in the least bit pretentious - regardless of what your neighbours think!

We used Angus, not Scottish but DH's family is Irish. Live in the SE, its never been a problem. We actually get a lot of comments on how nice it is as it's not cmon around here. Do it! You won't regret it if you really love it.

I'm in Scotland and Ds has friends called Hamish and Angus. My Scottish nephew is Ralph. All great names. I also know a Lachlan which I think is lovely.

Good strong name, use it OP. 😄
Otherwise call him Jack.

Cracking name - it was my first choice but DH vetoed it for us - but we settled on Angus. No Scottish connection at all and we live on the south coast. Never been an issue. So do it!!
