Hello,

Safiya is the top contender for our baby girl.

What do you think?

Thanks :)

Sounds like Sophia being pronounced with an accent. Not keen.

Orangebird69 · 29/04/2017 00:06

Are you Arabic/Muslim?

DramaAlpaca · 29/04/2017 00:07

Love it. It's Arabic isn't it? It's very pretty.

Isadora2007 · 29/04/2017 00:07

It's nice.

VanessaBet · 29/04/2017 00:08

It's pretty

Lovetunnocks · 29/04/2017 00:08

It's lovely. I know someone with this name with this pronunciation. If you love it, use it.

Willowson · 29/04/2017 00:13

Yes :) thank you

I think it's beautiful.

NuffSaidSam · 29/04/2017 00:15

I don't like it because it looks like a 'yooneek' spelling of Sophia or Sapphire, but if it works in your country/language/culture go for it.

ZilphasHatpin · 29/04/2017 00:16

Gorgeous! I love it.

FlannelTimCircleSocks · 29/04/2017 00:20

It's lovely - think I prefer it spelt Saffiyah. Love the nn Saffi too.

TheDowagerCuntess · 29/04/2017 00:21

It's not to my taste, but if there's a cultural or meaningful link for you, then go for it.

GotToGetMyFingerOut · 29/04/2017 00:21

I love it.

Beeziekn33ze · 29/04/2017 00:23

I think it's lovely. I may be biased because it's the name of the cool, brave, young woman (Saffiyah Khan) whose photo went viral recently when she stood up to the EDL as they demonstrated in Birmingham.

Beeziekn33ze · 29/04/2017 00:25

Apparently it means Lion's share; pure; best friend; untroubled. I'd go for it!

Sophronia · 29/04/2017 00:34

Lovely

AnneEyhtMeyer · 29/04/2017 00:37

My first thought was Chariot. Chariot Safiya.

EatSpamAmandaLamb · 29/04/2017 00:40

To me it sounds like Sapphire, which I neither like as a name nor jewel.
I understand it is an Arabic name but I think to many it would come across as though you were trying to be quirky with your spelling of Sapphire or Sophia as someone mentioned up thred.
As someone with an unusual name (at least on this side of the Irish Sea) I would stay away from a name that leaves the child answering the following questions for the rest of her life
"How do you spell THAT?"
"How do you pronounce it?"
"Where are you from?"
"Was your mother high?"
"I bet you get fed up of spelling out your name, don't you?
And the classic "OH THATS ERRRM UNUSUAL, do you like it?"

I really hate having to spell my name and explain it after every time I introduce myself.
(I want to move back to Ireland just so people know how to say my name Grin)

MrsC2810 · 29/04/2017 00:45

I went to high school with an Arabic girl named Safia, very pretty. She was nn Saffi/Saf

Annahibiscuits · 29/04/2017 00:47

Pretty common round here, no one would consider it 'try hard'

It's a lovely name

PenelopeFlintstone · 29/04/2017 00:49

I like it. I also went to secondary with a girl called that.

Buntysoven · 29/04/2017 00:51

I think it's pretty. Lovely to say out loud.

Jooni · 29/04/2017 06:22

Beautiful

neonrainbow · 29/04/2017 06:28

It never ceases to amaze me how offensive some people on mumsnet can be when names outside the white middle class arena are mentioned. " chariots Safiya"? I think some of you needto get out into the big wide world where not everyone is called William and Sophie.

Anyway. I like Safiya its beautiful.

ToesInWater · 29/04/2017 06:31

I think it's lovely.
