Dear Mummies and Mummies to be, please let me know what your thoughts are about the girl's name Ananda? We really like the meaning of it with my partner, it means "ultimate bliss" in sanskrit. We are thinking of giving two surnames with the main surname being Adams. Thank you for your opinions!

My maiden surname was very similar. The meaning is lovely "the indescribable bliss which is at the heart of life".

However, no-one ever knew how to spell it...Aman, Anan, Amand, Amend, Anand, Almond...it was annoying how often it was mis-spelt or mis-pronounced, even when I painstakingly went A for Apple, N for Normal etc

It's a mis-spelling of Amanda. Or she'll spend her whole life correcting people who think it is. Please don't do it.

It should be pronounced with a long "ah" sound at the beginning... short "a" at the end. So that might avoid confusion with Amanda. But then I guess people writing it down might assume wrongly that it is spelled "Arnanda".

In which case, you may as well just call her Perdita.

Anyway, if you're not Indian, giving her a Sanskrit name (which is beautiful btw) would be imperialistic, cultural appropriation.

Thank you very much to all of you once again for such a wide array of opinions!

Simply looks like you spelt Amanda incorrectly....

I knew an Ananda and she was lovely. It's a lovely name.
