Would it be odd to have a Maria to a sibling called Mariam?

yes

JennyHolzersGhost · 23/04/2017 17:37

I love the name Mariam but I don't think you can use it with a sibling called Maria, sorry. That ship has sailed.

BrokenRainbow · 23/04/2017 17:39

Really :(

Even though they're pronounced differently?
I have a Mari-am and the baby would be called Maa-ria (Arabic way)

I don't think so, no.

I thinky Mary may work? But Maria and Mariam? That's a one letter difference.

Mary, Marie, Marielle? Yes. Maria? Im personal o? No.

rollonthesummer · 23/04/2017 17:50

No-they are far too similar!

Jooni · 23/04/2017 17:52

Way way way too similar!

MarklahMarklah · 23/04/2017 18:01

Up to you really. A friend of mine once encountered twins called John and Jonathan.

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 23/04/2017 18:03

Maya? Mira? Miranda?

harderandharder2breathe · 23/04/2017 18:56

No!

fuzzywuzzy · 23/04/2017 18:57

They're two different names so I'd say yes they work fine.

DramaAlpaca · 23/04/2017 18:58

I was going to say they are much too similar, but maybe it would work since the Arabic way of pronouncing them is really quite different.

Mariam is a lovely name, by the way.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 23/04/2017 18:59

They are indeed in writing very similar, but when you say the names out loud, they're fine together.
I would OP, I love them both.

pinkmagic1 · 23/04/2017 19:05

Too similar I think even with the Arabic pronunciation. What about Malaika, Marwa, Mona or Manal if you want a name beggining with M? I especially like Malaika.

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 23/04/2017 19:27

I understand that the Arabic pronunciation is different. But first of all, are all people really going to stick to that? I wouldn't be so sure...

Plus, even with that pronunciation, it's very similar. I mean, I personally think that siblings with the same initials is already a bit too "samey"...
I like the suggestion of Malaika and Mona.

FrenchLavender · 23/04/2017 19:28

Yes it would be ridiculous. Mariam is just Maria with an extra letter on the end.

BrokenRainbow · 23/04/2017 20:40

Thank you for the suggestions and although Mary and Marie are lovely it has to be an Arabic name.

love Muna but SIL has one. My backups are Aisha, Laila (if born at night I suppose) or Maymun (spelling and pronunciation will be a nightmare).

MIL wanted Marwa but I think it's too old sounding for a baby.

WhatKatyDidnt · 23/04/2017 20:44

Aisha and Laila are so pretty and go really well with Mariam.

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 23/04/2017 20:49

I like Laila and Marwa.

Laila is such a beautiful name. I also know a really lovely woman called Aminah, I've always liked her name... (I'm pretty sure it's an Arabic name. If I'm wrong about that I'm sorry.)

Sophronia · 23/04/2017 21:00

I think they're too close, sorry.

JennyHolzersGhost · 23/04/2017 21:18

Marwa is nice. I know an Amina and I like her name. Also like Aisha.

buttercup54321 · 23/04/2017 23:03

Too similar

WildCherryBlossom · 24/04/2017 07:44

Aisha & Laila are beautiful. How about Humaira?

( I don't think you can do María & Mariam)

Pemba · 24/04/2017 20:11

Maria and Mariam are basically the same name. I thought Mariam WAS the Arabic version of Maria/Mary? Like in the Koran Jesus' mother is called Mariam? Both versions are nice, but I don't think you can have too sisters as it's too close. Would you have Anne and Anna? Unless there's something that I'm missing.

Pemba · 24/04/2017 20:13

Two sisters
