Grey or Reid?

It's definitely going to be one of these, so please no "neither" as that's just unhelpful.

Thanks!

I like them both. I know a Reid in real life. Totally suits him, I no longer think of the name as unusual. It's a pretty commonplace surname, but to my ear it's no different to calling your child Taylor or Parker.

punkpuffin · 22/04/2017 23:27

Reid is on my shortlist too!

I think for a little while Grey will still make people think of 50 shades. Same reason I wouldn't use Christian (or Anastasia for a girl). It's sullied the names for me!

I do like the sound of the name Grey though (but I love Frey too, which is the Anglicised version of the Norse god Freyr)

But between the two I would choose Reid.

UrsulaPandress · 22/04/2017 23:30

Didn't that wafty white bikini pianist woman have a husband called Graham which she shortened to Gray. I always found that the height of pretension. It didn't last.

Never heard of Grey or Reid as names, but your baby your choice.

mumofzach · 22/04/2017 23:35

My son's middle name is Gray as I loved the sound of it. I know some might compare it to the colour grey and think it's dull but I like it so sod what anyone else thinks!
I prefer Grey to Reid but both are refreshingly different so I'm sure you will pick a good one x

Gooseysgirl · 22/04/2017 23:36

Reid

INeedToEat · 22/04/2017 23:54

I hate all this surname bull shit. Jack is a surname, that didn't stop 1000's of people.

INeedToEat · 22/04/2017 23:54

Btw Reid 😁

PointlessUsername · 22/04/2017 23:58

Grey

MitzyLeFrouf · 23/04/2017 00:02

Big fan of Scottish Labour politicians Iain Grey and John Reid?

I'd go for Reid.

reuset · 23/04/2017 00:02

I hate all this surname bull shit. Jack is a surname, that didn't stop 1000's of people.

That's because Jack, first name, predates the surname.

PenelopeFlintstone · 23/04/2017 00:09

I can already hear it:
"Reid is a wee-eed!"
And as for Grey - just peals of child laughter.

Only1scoop · 23/04/2017 00:20

Grey sounds like a shortening of Graham.
Is Reid pronounced as Reid etc?

Strokethefurrywall · 23/04/2017 00:22

Where do you all live that kids think of these incredible insults for names. Seriously Grey and Reid? Nothing wrong with either!

I grew up with a perfectly normal first name and surname (George) and I still got "Georgie Porgie pudding and pie..." - kids will take the piss out of anything but you know what? Nobody is going to say the same thing when they're grown for crying out loud.

OP, both names are fine but I really like Reid, less well known than Grey!

Congratulations!

MitzyLeFrouf · 23/04/2017 00:28

Kids are very accepting of names. Everything is new to them so they have no idea if a name is ultra common or utterly rare. And even if they did think 'never met one of those before' Grey and Reid just don't seem that out of the ordinary, just one syllable names. Hardly teasing material.

neonrainbow · 23/04/2017 04:34

Not grey. For all the reasons already stated.

itfcbabe · 23/04/2017 17:21

I like both but at a push Grey

Aquamarine1029 · 25/04/2017 12:20

I love the name Grey.

YouBloodyWhat · 25/04/2017 14:30

I can't even tell if these are names for a boy or a girl?

Anyway, since grey is a colour and is synonymous with dullness, I'll go with Reid being marginally less awful. Only slightly though.

Kazzawazza69 · 26/04/2017 16:32

I don't really like either but Grey is better imo.

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 26/04/2017 21:03

Definitely Reid.

Grey is too... "old and grey". "Grey man".
and also 50 shades, of course...

10Betty10 · 27/04/2017 19:53

I don't get the Grey hate on here! It's really not an offensive name in the slightest! I think it's really rather sophisticated and lovely.

We are definitely using Gray as a middle name for our boy as it sounds good with everything! (At the minute it's looking like he'll be Rudy Gray Surname).

I do prefer the Gray spelling though as it differentiates from any 50 shades connotations! M

10Betty10 · 27/04/2017 19:54

Ps. Reid is also a great name.

Sallygoroundthemoon · 27/04/2017 19:59

Both are awful but if you insist I'd go for Grey as the lesser of two evils, though be prepared for everyone thinking it's short for Graham.
