DP loves Marnie

I'm not 100% sold on it but I do think it's pretty. I just worry that it's chavvy.

What do we think?

Not chavvy in the least. I've never seen "Geordie Shaw", but I'm guessing that they all match the description given earlier, velour track suits and greasy ponytails?

My niece is a Marnie, named after the wonderful singer Marni Nixon who ghosted all the Hollywood musical stars who couldn't sing themselves. Although the day before she was born the Hitchcock film Marnie was on TV so everyone assumed that's where it came from, but it wasn't.

LOVE it. And it does have a long name as it's short for Marianne.

TiredCluelessMummy · 21/04/2017 12:10

I love this name. It was a contender for DD. It is the name of the main character in The Raging Quiet by Sherryl Jordan which was my favourite book as a teenager. I must have read it a dozen times. So to me it represents a strong, brave, intelligent, fiercely loyal and kind woman. Definitely not a chav or a boring bland person!

BasicBetty · 21/04/2017 13:00

I like it!

DramaAlpaca · 21/04/2017 15:41

I like Marnie, it's very pretty.

What I don't like is the word 'chavvy' to describe a name. Do people really not realise what a horrible, offensive term it is?

Catherinebee85 · 21/04/2017 20:49

I think it's natural to make associations with names

As for it sounding American, Marnie is not really all that common in the US. It is also a surname with various spellings.

The only Marnie I have known was Scottish and her birth name was Margaret. (I'm American, btw).

franke · 22/04/2017 00:29

It would have been ds2's name. I love it.

DuggeeHugs · 22/04/2017 01:16

It's my great grandmother's name so I'm biased and think it's lovely Smile.

Mrsknackered · 22/04/2017 12:38

I definitely wouldn't say it's chavvy but I do think bacon sarnie. Ha.
It's quite cute, not my favourite though.

Mrsknackered · 22/04/2017 12:39

YY Drama I am so sick of chavvy being used to describe things.
It's really quite nasty.

MikeUniformMike · 22/04/2017 14:45

Marni Nixon. Yay!

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 22/04/2017 14:47

It reminds me of "sarnie"...

I'm not a fan. It's very nickname-y imo...

Redyellowpinkblue · 22/04/2017 14:49

I love it. It was going to be our dd2 name but husband wasn't 100% keen so we decided on something else but Marnie will be her middle name Grin

RuncibleSp00n · 22/04/2017 14:50

A bit American, a bit 'cutesy'.
In same box as Darcey.
Also a bit too much like 'mardy'.

What about Monica/Mona/Margarita instead?

BounceBounceSplishSplash · 22/04/2017 14:52

I went to school many years ago with a Marnie and I've loved the name since.

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 22/04/2017 14:53

Marina nn Marnie? Or maybe Marianne or Marine?

crazymissdaisy · 22/04/2017 14:56

Love it, and not chavvy! I teach a lovely Marnie, very pretty, lovely family, hard working, fun. I suppose my only qualm would be the "imagine x as a barrister / top surgeon / Prime Minister" bit, but then again my own DDs have quite "young" and girly short-forms of their names. Is Marnie an abbreviated version of something?

flumpybear · 22/04/2017 15:04

I used to know a Marnie who was a dreadful little bitch I'm afraid so it totally put me off the name. I liked it before I knew her, but these days it's just a signpost in my mind d for a manipulative, spiteful liar I'm afraid .... sorry 😐

halcyondays · 22/04/2017 15:07

Lovely name, the only thing I associate it with is When Marnie was there

Mumzypopz · 22/04/2017 21:20

She may get called Marnie Sarnie?!
