Thoughts on Takara?

I love it but it's a bit of an unusual name, I'd like to know how other people feel about it / what they think of when they hear it. Thank you :)

I don't love it, but it's certainly not the worst name. It sounds Japanese or Maori to me. I could imagine it as a manga cartoon characters name

It's for a girl, and yes it is a Japanese name (I'm a huge anime fan so I'm fine with it sounding like a character's name, however I don't believe it's a very popular name in Japan and I don't think there are currently any characters with this name) - I wasn't aware of a company that sells dolls but I'll certainly look it up and check.

I'm not Japanese, however I lived there for 6 years (I still visit my friends there often). I was told by my friend it meant treasure, not special, however I guess a name can have multiple meanings.

Not come across this name before, I'd pronounce it tack ara to rhyme with Clara and although it sounds Japanese I have no associations or preconceptions.

Some people will think it's a made up name, if that bothers you x

Seeing as Tamara is a name quite commonly used in the UK... Why not Takara? I like it :)

It's pronounced Tah-kah-rah, so the nickname Kara may be used (but I'm fine with that). Also it doesn't really bother me if people think it's a made up name, but that hadn't occurred to me before.

Sounds like a type of car to me (the new Vauxhall Takara, a VW Takara or whatever).

That would be my only issue. That it could be the nickname... Kara is fine. But tacky? Maybe not so good...

It made me think of the book Tarka the Otter. I thought maybe you'd spelled it wrong.
I've never heard of it before, but I've heard stranger names.
And I do quite like different names with a story behind them. You've chosen it because you have connections with Japan so that makes it special.

I don't really think it's that hard to spell.

There aren't any pokemon called Takara, but one of the companies that produce pokemon toys is called Takara Tomy but it's not that popular I don't think, I'd never heard of it until today.

Kara is an obvious nickname whereas Tacky isn't so I doubt anyone would call her that when there are other options (Tara / Kara)

I'm not Japanese (or black) but I did live Osaka for over 6 years and I speak the language almost fluently.

You don't need to be Japanese to use a name of Japanese origin! Go for it, it's unusual but pretty :)

It's lovely OP and obviously special to you. I wasn't aware you had to be from the country of origin to name your child a certain name. One of mine have an Ancient Greek name. And I'm not Greek (although I do feel ancient!)
