I love it but it's a bit of an unusual name, I'd like to know how other people feel about it / what they think of when they hear it. Thank you :)

Isn't that the Japanese company that sells Blyth dolls?

Sophronia · 17/04/2017 12:14

Is it for a boy or girl?

jarviscockerslover · 17/04/2017 12:14

I don't love it, but it's certainly not the worst name. It sounds Japanese or Maori to me. I could imagine it as a manga cartoon characters name

JaeDon · 17/04/2017 12:37

It's for a girl, and yes it is a Japanese name (I'm a huge anime fan so I'm fine with it sounding like a character's name, however I don't believe it's a very popular name in Japan and I don't think there are currently any characters with this name) - I wasn't aware of a company that sells dolls but I'll certainly look it up and check.

It means special.

I like it but only if you're Japanese

JaeDon · 17/04/2017 12:45

I'm not Japanese, however I lived there for 6 years (I still visit my friends there often). I was told by my friend it meant treasure, not special, however I guess a name can have multiple meanings.

Not come across this name before, I'd pronounce it tack ara to rhyme with Clara and although it sounds Japanese I have no associations or preconceptions.

Some people will think it's a made up name, if that bothers you x

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 17/04/2017 14:16

tu-ku-ruh?

Seeing as Tamara is a name quite commonly used in the UK... Why not Takara? I like it :)

JaeDon · 17/04/2017 17:06

It's pronounced Tah-kah-rah, so the nickname Kara may be used (but I'm fine with that). Also it doesn't really bother me if people think it's a made up name, but that hadn't occurred to me before.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 17/04/2017 19:46

Why not OP, I like Kara for short, or even Tara.

MadameDePomPom · 17/04/2017 19:49

It sounds quite nice but wasn't it the name of a body spray in the 1980s?

MaidenMotherCrone · 17/04/2017 19:51

The body spray was Limara.

herethereandeverywhere · 17/04/2017 19:52

Sounds like a type of car to me (the new Vauxhall Takara, a VW Takara or whatever).

MadameDePomPom · 17/04/2017 20:01

Oh yeah Limara that was it. 😀

PunkrockerGirl · 17/04/2017 20:08

Awful. She'll have a lifetime of having to spell it/explain it. Just why would you wish that on any kid, especially your own Confused

bigchris · 17/04/2017 20:10

It's one of the new pokemon, people will think you've named her after a card game / TV show

mycavitiesareempty · 17/04/2017 22:07

Takara is hardly difficult to spell!

Isadora2007 · 17/04/2017 23:24

Tacky?

That would be my only issue. That it could be the nickname... Kara is fine. But tacky? Maybe not so good...

teaandakitkat · 17/04/2017 23:31

It made me think of the book Tarka the Otter. I thought maybe you'd spelled it wrong.
I've never heard of it before, but I've heard stranger names.
And I do quite like different names with a story behind them. You've chosen it because you have connections with Japan so that makes it special.

JaeDon · 17/04/2017 23:39

I don't really think it's that hard to spell.

There aren't any pokemon called Takara, but one of the companies that produce pokemon toys is called Takara Tomy but it's not that popular I don't think, I'd never heard of it until today.

Kara is an obvious nickname whereas Tacky isn't so I doubt anyone would call her that when there are other options (Tara / Kara)

PaperdollCartoon · 17/04/2017 23:42

It's an odd choice unless you're Japanese or possibly black.

JaeDon · 17/04/2017 23:47

I'm not Japanese (or black) but I did live Osaka for over 6 years and I speak the language almost fluently.

Buntysoven · 19/04/2017 23:00

What an odd comment Paperdoll. I think it has a resonance for you OP and it's pretty so go for it!

tatree · 19/04/2017 23:06

You don't need to be Japanese to use a name of Japanese origin! Go for it, it's unusual but pretty :)

mummabearfoyrbabybears · 19/04/2017 23:21

It's lovely OP and obviously special to you. I wasn't aware you had to be from the country of origin to name your child a certain name. One of mine have an Ancient Greek name. And I'm not Greek (although I do feel ancient!)
