Prosper (for a boy)?

DH's suggestion, I love it but am concerned it is at least one of the above...

Thoughts?

Too much

Itshello · 16/04/2017 10:00

Yes it is.

NataliaOsipova · 16/04/2017 10:00

I immediately thought of Prospero (The Tempest), so it just sounded very odd to me I'm afraid.....

Ecureuil · 16/04/2017 10:00

Fraid so.

user1483387154 · 16/04/2017 10:01

Its ok. Cant say I love it though.
Reminds me of Prospero a fictional character and the protagonist of William Shakespeare's play The Tempest.

CaptainBraandPants · 16/04/2017 10:02

Natalia I also thought of Prospero. Maybe they have a daughter called Miranda...

MsJolly · 16/04/2017 10:04

Much much too much...I envision years of bullying and nasty comments. Don't do it to your child.

Floggingmolly · 16/04/2017 10:07

Oh. Please don't. I met a Justice, a few weeks ago. I judged harshly...

VeryPunny · 16/04/2017 10:07

To be honest, I have heard far worse. And I am quit a names traditionalistGrin

I know quite a few virtue names though -Prudence, Blessing, Gift etc. It can be quite cultural.

ChippieFishieHorshie · 16/04/2017 10:07

It does make me think of Prospero.

But there's nothing wrong with that name, imo. I actually quite like it :)

Itshello · 16/04/2017 10:08

Yes I know a Freedom and have got to say I quite like it.

ChippieFishieHorshie · 16/04/2017 10:08

But then again, I actually quite like virtue names (well, some virtue names).

VeryPunny · 16/04/2017 10:09

Quit =quite, obviously.

Spadequeen · 16/04/2017 10:09

Is there a meaning behind it for your dh?

LobsterQuadrille · 16/04/2017 10:10

I love Shakespearean names and I have a Miranda, but that's a bit .... too much IMO.

GaladrielsRing · 16/04/2017 10:10

I work with a lovely African man called Prosper. Never thought it weird or pretentious.

NC4T · 16/04/2017 10:11

I'd assume you were west African.

DarkestBeforeDawn · 16/04/2017 10:12

I actually think it is quite sweet - and normally only go for more traditional names

Error404usernamenotfound · 16/04/2017 10:12

Sorry, but please don't, it does sound pretentious.

I always think that virtue names kind of put pressure on the child to live up to their name, or that might just be me being weird...

lljkk · 16/04/2017 10:13

I think it's fine. A LOT of people won't even know what it means (I am including native English speakers in that). Just obscure enough to be nice.

Luckybe40 · 16/04/2017 10:14

Massively massively pretentious! Poor kid has to have that name his whole life!

Error404usernamenotfound · 16/04/2017 10:14

Further to pps, virtue names do tend to work well in certain African cultures, but I really don't think that most of them translate well in the UK, with the odd notable exception eg Constance.

Marmalade85 · 16/04/2017 10:16

I like it. Are you or DH West African? I know a Blessing and a Goodluck.

Floggingmolly · 16/04/2017 10:18

Everyone most people know what prosper means Confused. Quite a spurious argument there.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 16/04/2017 10:19

I would assume you had African heritage. I know a Fabulous and a Comfort which fit them perfectly but im not sure would work for people from othrr cultures. I think the same would apply for Prosper.
