Left wing boy baby name ideas?!

slicerrice · 15/04/2017 15:29

Hi- does anyone have any left wing historical/political boys name ideas? I'm having a boy in August and after some ideas!
My DH is French so ideally the name needs to work in French too...

Thanks!

Orson - as in Orson Wells. Liked this name if we had a ds.

WyfOfBathe · 15/04/2017 22:34

How obviously left-wing do you want it to be? Keir is an obvious reference to Keir Hardie, whereas James (the name of 3 of the Todpuddle Martyrs) is less obvious.

Bernie (Sanders)
Jeremy (Corbyn)
Emmanuel (Macron)
Jean-Luc (Mélenchon)
George (Orwell)
Avram/Noam (Chomsky)
Oscar (Wilde)

Given your surname, do you really need a "left wing" name? Confused

Atticus (from To Kill A Locking Bird).

Atticus Marx has a ring to it I reckon.

Fidel Marx. And if he grows up to be a massive Tory then his name can be your revenge Grin

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 16/04/2017 04:40

Call him Fidel Marx and it is guaranteed he will become an investment banker for Goldman Sachs. Or......a UKIP councillor with his own maypole in the front garden that he will jig around daily in a joyful and patriotic manner.

Tread carefully OP!

Keir. It's my favourite boys name.
So much so that we named ds1 Keir. Not because of political beliefs, we just liked the name, although if we were Tory voters we probably wouldn't have gone for it. However, as soon as he turned 18 he joined the LibDems . Serves us right. Grin

FatOldBag · 16/04/2017 05:40

Robespierre?

Although with your surname the obvious choice would be Karl.

A left wing name? Really? I bet you're a real joy to have about. Why not be really alternative and go with a name you like. Serve you right if your son is a Tory PM!

ButtonmushroomEx · 16/04/2017 06:13

Or take the humorous route and call him Skid?

TinfoilHattie · 16/04/2017 08:12

If my parents had called me a name purely because it was left-wing I would definitely have gone in the other direction to spite them.

Totally disagree that it's the same as people asking for names that are strong or classic. Political beliefs are very personal and left wing parents do not automatically equal left wing offspring. Advertising your beliefs through your children is all shades of wrong. It's like SNP voters choosing a name like Independence or Holyrood for their child.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 16/04/2017 08:25

Or like how some parents in NI might choose Niamh and some might choose Amy, depending on their beliefs?

Agree Fidel would be silly and unfair, but Fabian or keir are fine!

JazzAnnNonMouse · 16/04/2017 08:31

To me it's no different to asking for a Christian name or a nature name or a name that means star etc they're all themed.

I think if you went for something too obvious eg karl with your surname that would be a bit Hmm but there are lots of generic names that have a left wing connotation
