Would be Aleksander / Maksymilian on the BC.

but it is not ignorant for a British person to have no knowledge of polish names.

You need to look up the word ignorant.

You need to look up the word ignorant.

It is generally used in a rude and insulting manner.

NameChange30 · 13/04/2017 16:39

And it's not at all rude or insulting to tell someone that a name from their language/culture must be "made up"!!

BertrandRussell · 13/04/2017 16:45

"And it's not at all rude or insulting to tell someone that a name from their language/culture must be "made up"!!

Well, it isn't- if the OP doesn't make it clear that they are Polish spellings. Which she didn't for some time. Another poster and I made the point before she did!

NameChange30 · 13/04/2017 16:55

She didn't need to make it clear, it was obvious if you're not ignorant

HalfCarrot · 13/04/2017 17:05
  1. Maksym
  2. Aleksander
  3. Maksymilian (it's too long to remember how to spell it)
glumbumm · 13/04/2017 17:15

Name you may have an extensive knowledge of Polish names but a lot of people don't. Ignorant is being used here in a derogatory way and it's unfair.

BertrandRussell · 13/04/2017 17:18

"She didn't need to make it clear, it was obvious if you're not ignorant"

Don't be ridiculous. It was obvious to those of us who recognise these particular Polish first names. Not obvious to those that don't. It is not ignorant not to know things.

Itaintme · 13/04/2017 17:22

Then may posters should have asked before jumping in with the usual snarky replies that Baby Names is full of.

NameChange30 · 13/04/2017 17:25

"It is not ignorant not to know things."

That is the dictionary definition of ignorant! Lacking knowledge!

People just take offence when their lack of knowledge is pointed out. But it's not the most heinous insult in the world. It's not the same as stupid (lacking intelligence).

ShineyNewName · 13/04/2017 17:28

I don't think I really even know any Polish people beyond a hello in passing I don't think, if I do we're obviously not that close since I can't remember them right now and it was even obvious to me.

Even if it weren't obvious to me, it is sort of obvious to everybody that since we invented ships and planes we have a very good mix of people in most places and maybe it's just a name we haven't heard from somewhere else. If I saw a name I'd never heard of or didn't recognise the spelling of, I probably wouldn't think anything but if I did it would probably just be "ok maybe they aren't British" instead of "what is this nonsense made up name" I do realise there is a huge world beyond Britain though and that most non British people don't have British names.

ZilphasHatpin · 13/04/2017 17:55

It is generally used in a rude and insulting manner

I didn't use the word initially on this thread so I can't speak for how it was used. I was only saying that it was indeed ignorant (lacking the knowledge) to not know they were policy spellings. There is nothing wrong with not being familiar with polish names, but it is still something you are ignorant about. The poster in question wasn't just ignorant however, they were insulting about the names because they had never heard of them. This is possibly why someone was rude and insulting in response to them.

ZilphasHatpin · 13/04/2017 17:56

It is not ignorant not to know things.

That is exactly what ignorance is!

ZilphasHatpin · 13/04/2017 17:58

Polish spellings

ZilphasHatpin · 13/04/2017 17:58

And fwiw all names are made up.

BlueChairs · 13/04/2017 18:13

Aleksander is a name . Maksymillion sounds really ghetto and just stupid when spelt like his. SNS

NinjaLeprechaun · 13/04/2017 18:26

We used to have a cat named Kuba, ignores 90% of the thread named after a great-uncle. I've always liked the name.
Personally, of the options given, I prefer Aleksander, because that's one of my favourite boy names no matter how it's spelled.

One caution, although it's probably much less likely with Aleks, my last name has a KS sitting next to each other and for some reason people just can't seem to get their heads around the concept - easily 50% of people will mentally swap the letters around and read it as SK.

JuniePW · 14/04/2017 09:15

Aleksander

Itshello · 14/04/2017 10:29

To be fair, a lot of people wouldn't know they are Polish spellings. I teach in a secondary school of over 1000 pupils and there is not a single Polish child. It is not multi-cultural at all in my area.
