What names have you been put off?

Are there any names you liked but have been put off by association or an event?

For me (A=and it's a shame because it is of course very popular and well liked) but one is George. My grandpa used to talk about "having a George" meaning a number 2...he said it was a navy thing and they'd talk about "going to the John for a George" and now all that side of my family still use the term! Has anyone else ever heard this? I've never come across elsewhere it so I wonder if it was something that someone my grandpa served with came up with and it caught on.

I also think Fraser is nice but put off by a horrible ex and I think Myra is pretty but can't disconnect it from Hindley.

Thanks to a truly abhorrent ex, I am no longer terribly enamoured with the name Nathanael.

Caitlyn (and all the spelling variations) was one of my favourite girls names for a long time, but Caitlyn Jenner has kind of put me off.

When I was twelve, I briefly knew a girl who was called 'Isis', and I remember being insanely jealous of her name because it was so exotic and beautiful... Funnily enough - not so envious now!

When pregnant with DD1, I told my mother we were struggling between two names, Isobel and Lydia.
"Oh you can't have either of those:
Isobel - Is a bell necessary on a bicycle,
Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia. Oh Lydia The Queen of Tattoo!"

She's nice like that my mother....

CraftyMummyof3Tiddlers · 14/04/2017 16:06

Kerry, Sally David, Matthew , Rebecca, Adam, Lauren but pronounced loh ren (a good friend I've known since primary school is pronounced lah-ren),

thebakerwithboobs · 14/04/2017 16:11

Jacob. One of our friends uses 'Jacobs' to mean 'goolies.' Sadly, we had already named Jacob before I was aware this was a relatively common usage 😂

If we'd had a daughter I would have called her Madeleine after my Nanna but I think it will now forever be associated with McCann.

Jessikita · 14/04/2017 18:22

I hate the name Sienna as it reminds me of SennaKot

Ashers40 · 14/04/2017 18:28

I really loved Lydia until DH said it reminded him of chlamydia....

Deathraystare · 14/04/2017 18:29

Cannot remember any of the names unfortunately, but when we were thinking of names for my brother's two kids, everytime we came uo with a name it was vetoed by eithr my brother or SIL as they are both teachers and would say "No that reminds me of ...." Some little swine they taught!!!

Occadodo · 14/04/2017 18:30

Hayley .... all that I've know have been supercilious bitches!

Amanda ... inverted snobs

Julia / Julie.... just absolute and butter twunts

Jessikita · 14/04/2017 18:33

Jessikita · 14/04/2017 18:34

I hate the name Lydia as well reminds me of liver and Chamidiya as well.

I hate the name Leslie/Lesley on a man or a woman even more so when it's shortened to Les. Sorry to offend.

DagenhamRoundhouse · 14/04/2017 18:50

Hilary - bossy and overbearing.

TinselTwins · 14/04/2017 18:52

Analyssa may mean graced with gods bounty

Lemonnaise · 14/04/2017 19:27

My name is on here twiceGrin

Sylvia always makes me think of the word saliva.

Rockhopper81 · 14/04/2017 19:37

Clare/Claire, Debbie/Deborah, Hayley, Amy - pretty much every girl/woman of this name I've met have been a bit of a cow really.

Ian - name of a boy who bullied me at school.

And a long list of names through working in education - it's amazing how many names will forever be associate with 'so-and-so'...

No offence meant to anybody reading of those names - I'm sure you're all lovely people. Smile

chickenstock · 14/04/2017 19:43

I loved the name Freya for DD but I was reading a book while pregnant and a character with that name, who was lovely, died unexpectedly. I got foolishly superstitious about it and scrubbed it off my list. I blame the hormones!

TinselTwins · 14/04/2017 19:44

Samantha. Would be a nice enough name… if I didn't know someone with that name who draaaaws out every one of the three "a"s:
Saa-maaaaaanffaar
Also a bitch.

TakeOneDayAtATime · 14/04/2017 20:11

All the Connor / Conor's I've met have been naughty.

Fauchelevent · 14/04/2017 20:47

As a child I also loved the name Michaela but I have never in my life met a nice one.

Benedikte2 · 14/04/2017 21:26

Serenity sounds fine but none I've known have been serene loud and abnoxious. So dangerous to pick a name like this.

Mustang27 · 14/04/2017 21:27

Karis, not that I would have ever picked it but was bullied horrifically by one and just cringe every time I hear it.

My name choices are relatively unusual not odd though so tend not to be put off as they are few and far between. Lucky really.

porterwine · 14/04/2017 21:32

OvariesForgotHerPassword oh no..that's my name! Hopefully I am not the colossal cunt you refer to . I've never liked it myself because at nursery school I got called Brian a lot and a few people have asked me if it's the female version of Brian. So I just hear it as Brian-ee

One of my favourite names (And 90% sure will chose it for DD) is Anna..has been for years. I'm terrified that someone will come along in the next 2 months who will put me off it !

Never met an awful Joanne they have all been caring and in professions that mirror that but it isn't pretty... it can sound very white trash depending on who says it.

TinselTwins · 14/04/2017 21:48

Yes all Joannes I know are friendly and hard working.

Don't like the name though, don't think they do either they all shorten it to Jo

Maggie2828 · 14/04/2017 21:58

Abigail. A-big-ail. Can't stop hearing it that way, which is a shame because I love it!
