Kanaye = NoUKant
Wink
Are you going to tell us how it's pronounced?

Smitff · 07/04/2017 18:54

Are you trying to not use Kanye (as in west)?

I'd say Cuh-na-yeh. It's nice but unfortunately Mr West has spoiled it for you

Sophronia · 07/04/2017 18:56

Can-eye-ee?

ecuse · 07/04/2017 19:31

No. I could have a couple of guesses, but I would definitely not be sure.

AmysTiara · 07/04/2017 19:34

Can ay?

FatOldBag · 07/04/2017 19:38

No. I'd plump for "Can - I"? Are you going to put us out of our misery?

TheElephantofSurprise · 07/04/2017 19:39

K'n- ay- uh.

porterwine · 07/04/2017 19:40

Can-eye-ay

LittleDoYouKnow · 07/04/2017 19:55

Oh sorry!! Koala is right. Nope, not trying to avoid Kanye Grin we are Japanese and trying to find a name haha. We have a Sam... Which is very well known here but we couldn't find any other names we liked but do like this one but it seems like it would just be too difficult.

I didn't immediately recognise this as a Japanese name. If I had, that probably would have helped me tackle the pronunciation.

But just seeing it written down, my first thought was Kanye West. So I'd have guessed Kan-ah-ye, like Kayne but with a longer sound in the middle.

Other ideas

Kyo
Yoshi
Ryuu
Toru (love this name)

buttercup54321 · 07/04/2017 21:29

can aye

buttercup54321 · 07/04/2017 21:30

can aye

Laquila · 07/04/2017 21:31

Nope, sorry! How about Matsuro, Mat for short?

isittheholidaysyet · 07/04/2017 21:33

No idea on this one. Sorry.

AliceKlar · 07/04/2017 22:43

I guessed Kan-eye-a. Then googled and it was Kan-eye and is Japanese which surprised me because I thought it would be African/Jamaican in origin.

I like it but you will get lots of weird and wonderful attempts at saying it as this thread shows.

tygr · 07/04/2017 23:20

I guessed Ker-nye-uh with emphasis on second syllable.

I like the look of it - I like K names and people will get used to it the more they use it. Might have a problem with strangers the first time they see it.

steveharley · 08/04/2017 00:01

If you like it, use it. You'll only have to tell most people once. Working in a school I have encountered so many names that are new to me. I just ask. I have been known to stick a phonetic post it in the register for a few days to help me along!

lljkk · 08/04/2017 07:50

the guy who dates a Kardashian, yes? He's a Kanaye ("Can-yay") I thought.

PamBagnallsGotACollage · 08/04/2017 08:06

If you like the name, use it. Tell people how it's pronounced. Don't choose a name to pander to those few people who have a mental block when it come to 'forrin' names. They should never be pandered to.

Mandraki · 17/04/2017 08:32

No idea but it makes me think of Kanye West

Mandraki · 17/04/2017 08:33

Kan-ay-ah?

booellesmum · 17/04/2017 08:39

If you like it go with it.
My kids go to a school that is very multicultural with lots of names I can't spell or pronounce until I am told how. Then I know!
It won't be a problem.
If everyone worried about this there would be very few Irish names used surely.

meditrina · 17/04/2017 08:46

Out of context, I wouldn't have known how to say it.

But I can pronounce a fair few Japanese names and think I'd get it right now I know that's the origin.

Will the DC's surname be Japanese too? Because then people will generally come across it in context and there might me more who say it correctly. And of course people who actually know your DC will learn how to pronounce it.

But, you'll probably have to tell an awful lot of people when you first meet them. And the DC will have to learn to listen out for likely mispronunciation (eg in waiting rooms or anywhere else you might be called formward by name). Then again, lots of people with names from areas other than Western Europe manage those things.

moonlightmile · 17/04/2017 17:18

kan - ay ???

mycavitiesareempty · 17/04/2017 22:11

If it's pron Kan- eye could you not spell it Kanae in English?
