Would you find this odd? does anyone know any girls named Cooper? we know of boys named this.

Its a family name and we'd like to include it somehow but don't know if its a bit too 'out there' to name a little girl it?

Uh I had a boyfriend whose last name was Cooper and he was a massive twat, so it just made me think of that ha!

It is pretty odd for a girls name, less strange for a boy. I'm not keen on it personally but it's up to you!

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 04/04/2017 13:50

Reminds me of the film trolls 🙈

MrsXx4 · 04/04/2017 13:51

Oh no!!! is it in Trolls!? I haven't seen it!

My aunt's spaniel is called Cooper, it's male. Suits him but humans? No.

Ontopofthesunset · 04/04/2017 14:35

There are so many girls' names to choose from that are nicer than Cooper. First of all, it's a very common surname so heard a lot. Secondly, the primary meaning of 'cooper', ie a barrel maker, is not particularly appealing. Thirdly, it sounds like 'coop' as in chicken coop and therefore also like 'cooped up', suggesting imprisonment or confinement. Fourthly, though perhaps this is just the shops near me, it looks like Co-op.

ColourfulOrangex · 04/04/2017 17:51

I like it :)

Oysterbabe · 04/04/2017 17:52

It's fine for a dog.

CaoNiMartacus · 04/04/2017 19:20

The only Cooper I know is a dog.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 04/04/2017 21:06

Please don't, only use it as a middle name.

Mclaren37 · 04/04/2017 22:12

I like it too. Personally I prefer pretty, vintage names for girls. But I think it's lovely and refreshing on a girl. It sounds cool and sassy.

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 04/04/2017 22:18

Yes it is mrs. Although I don't like it personally go with what you like :) I get mixed reviews with my DC names.

MaisyPops · 04/04/2017 22:19

I dont even think it works as a first name if im honest.

If iy was to be a name id say it sounds like a boy name.

buttercup54321 · 04/04/2017 22:53

Really Terrible

Buntysoven · 05/04/2017 00:35

Hideous

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 05/04/2017 00:37

I really like it

KoalaDownUnder · 05/04/2017 00:42

Awful. Bad enough on a boy.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/04/2017 03:02

Initially I'd find it odd, but I think children grow into their name.
I remember a lady about 25 ago. A women named her little girl Robyn. I'd never heard of it as a girls name, and I remember being secretly astonished thinking but Roby(i)n's a boys name. Now you hear the name Roby(I)n you automatically think girls' name.
I think within the next 100-200 years at the very longest. It won't be shocking for boys to be named for example Ava Sophie Isabelle, and girls named Oliver Lucas and David, and no one will bat an eye lid.

Nospringflower · 05/04/2017 03:58

I quite like it!

Pemba · 05/04/2017 04:25

But babyspider it is never that way round is it? Boys' names become used for girls and feminised, after that they are not usually used for boys anymore, eg Aubrey, Avery, Harper, Taylor. Can't think of a girls' name that has become used for boys.

If a girl is given a boy's name you often get comments saying things like it is 'cool' and 'strong' . But why can't the names that women have had in the past be 'strong' too? If you call a girl Blake or something apparently that's fine now, but I bet nobody would call their son 'Beth' for instance. They would probably say people would make fun of them. We should think about what this says about how society regards males and females differently.

I always feel very sorry for a little girl given an obviously masculine name. She will probably hate it when she gets a bit older

As for Cooper, it's a very ordinary and meh surname meaning 'barrel maker'. Not brilliant as a first name for a boy, horrible on a girl.

Paninotogo · 05/04/2017 04:47

Generally I like masculine names on girls, I even like last names used as first names. But Cooper is an ugly name, really ugly. No wonder the goofy ugly giraffe in trolls has cooper as its ugly name.

bingandabong · 05/04/2017 05:58

Why do people say that's a dogs name! I know dogs called Lucy, Dave, Jack, Bob, katie, max etc...so should we not use those name Confused
OP you sound very unsure about the name for a first name, so why not have it as a middle?

MrsXx4 · 05/04/2017 09:02

I never knew what Cooper meant...as in 'barrel maker'.

I just know it as a family name - It was my mums maiden name and obviously my nans surname. I miss my nan terribly and would love to use it as a nod to her. I don't feel I can use her first name as my cousins and aunts have already used it and there would be too many family members with the same name. I've always loved Cooper for a little boy and really wanted it to work for a little girl but I would hate to give her a name she'd get picked on for. xx

I think it would be totally fine as a middle name, OP.

MitzyLeFrouf · 05/04/2017 12:04

It would be unfortunate if she turned out to be barrel shaped.
