Naming twins, big issue

My partner and our son will be moving to the UK in a few months (intent is to raise DC's in London, husband was born in France & raised uk) and I will be having twin daughters a few months after that. I myself am dutch/ greek but raised abroad.
Our son has a very 'out there' kind of name - I didn't see the issue until an English colleague baulked. We had planned what we thought was a lovely sibset with cute nicknames that was totally acceptable in the expat-y, sligthly nutty environment where we are now, but since the comment, are rather worried this won't go down well in England, where everyone I know is called George/Edward/Grace. The kids will likely be heading to London preps in a few years and I would hate for them to stand out awfully. Basically, how crazy is too crazy for you Brits?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Theodore is most definitely not out there. Calista is more unusual, but very pretty. I've heard of Albertina before, but not Albertine. Also pretty.

clarabellski · 03/04/2017 14:26

Calista is a beautiful name. It was on our shortlist for a girl (we had a boy)

Albertine I don't like but it doesn't sound 'out there'. Beatrice is lovely!

TeenAndTween · 03/04/2017 14:52

A bit of a pain for them when filling out forms!
Have you considered a more standard middle name to go with the more unusual first names?

2014newme · 03/04/2017 14:56

T-Rex 😂

Nicknames evolve I don't think you can choose them.in advance although shortened versions of the name you obviously can. Not sure I would be going for cali and Ali though! 😂

Teabagtits · 03/04/2017 15:03

Theodore isn't really unusual but T. rex might be one of those sounded fun at the time names the child will grow to hate.

I don't like Calista but that's because of calista flockhart and my hatred of allymcbeal.

I /love/ Albertine tho - I think that's an absolutely amazing name. If I was having a girl I'd definitely
consider this.

Now if you have any more unused unusual boy's name did love to hear them as I'm really stuck and I am liking your naming conventions :)

diddl · 03/04/2017 15:09

Theodore isn't at all unusual-although his other names might be.

That said, I do know a Rex.

Calista Flockhart is quite well known, isn't she?

Athena & Otilie I think are known of as names, although perhaps not well used in UK.

Beatrice very well known in UK, Elektra is a Marvel character so perhaps well known but not well used.

Albertine I would say is the most unusual.

Presumably feminine form of Albert.

Gorgeous names.

heron98 · 03/04/2017 15:32

They sound frightfully posh to me and you'd be laughed at where I live (shit area). But in the right circles I am sure they'd be fine.

harderandharder2breathe · 03/04/2017 15:33

Albertine is out there!

Theodore and Calista aren't and are lovely

I had to give a talk to some prospective law students a few weeks ago and I mentioned Ally McBeal during the talk to a sea of blank faces. Then I realised....they weren't even born when Ally McBeal was on telly. Was it really that long ago?!?!

northernylass · 03/04/2017 15:44

Lovely, lovely names.

MamaHanji · 03/04/2017 16:56

Magnolia

Those names are amazing. Please keep them!

DizzyDigestive · 03/04/2017 19:01

I have never heard of Calista or Albertine before. Though I'm not in London.

I think people are more accepting of unusual.names than you think. I live in a fairly conservative town on the country and have a daughter with a very unusual name (actually very similar to.one of the ones in here) and have had no issues, most people seem to like it. I think it's easier to be more adventurous with girls names.

buttercup54321 · 03/04/2017 23:35

Don't like Albertine at all but the other names are fine.

Buntysoven · 04/04/2017 00:02

Beautiful refreshing names. Good on you OP!
