Louisa (it's my least favourite. But I think it would work pretty much everywhere?)
Isadora (2nd favourite)
Virginia (absolute favourite. But it it too virginal?)
Isolda

Arik
Emmett
Yaron
Yonatan (that's not a creative spelling, btw)

passing awww, thanks :) I think you're one of the first (the first) to really like Yaron :)!

mummy lemon

Yes, that's what I was worried about... I personally grew up with different people using very different versions of my name. But my younger brother for example really hated it when people did that... I just worry that english people may assume it's a creative /unique spelling...

it's not that I dislike Jonathan. I simply can't pronounce it.... ;)

elquinto

Ah, true... Yes, I know what you mean.
I'm not particularly bothered by the Cornish word association either (well, not anymore). Seeing as Emmett in Lego has the same name. Idk, I feel like the little children demographic already knows the name, so even if they do know what Emmett means in Cornish...

Girls wise I really like Isolde/Isolda.
Think Arik is great for a boy.

tovelitime · 01/04/2017 23:07

Yaron and Arik are great, Yonatan is a bit religious but I'm getting the Israeli thing on the boys names. So many people saying they're made up names when they are so not, all quite common names

"Yonatan is a bit religious but I'm getting the Israeli thing on the boys names" Weirdly enough that wasn't even a conscious decision. Blush

But we're currently thinking about calling the LO Jonathan. I and my part of the family would say Yonatan, and DH who has English as a first language (so no pronunciation issues) would say Tsho-nu-thun.

But we're still worried this may confuse/upset a child.

Tbh, I also thought that some English/American names "must" be made up when I heard them the first time... That happens when different cultures mix, I think. :)

Thank you for the comment. :)

Thanks :)

It isn't too Wagner, is it?
Nobody mentioned it here, so maybe not...? (I was actually very curious to see whether somebody would comment)
But still... Maybe it has to be more of a gp name (although it is DH's favourite name...)

Isadora is fine, lovely with Clarissa (what a fine name that is). Yes, the modern dancer had a tragic, if interesting life, on many levels, but how many people aware of that I don't know.

Isolde and Isolda, I've heard too many 'interpretations' of the pronunciation, mangled basically, which puts me off.

Louisa - nice

Virginia - teasing potential perhaps, alas

Emmett I like for a boy. I confess to never having heard of Yonatan.

reuset · 02/04/2017 12:24

Ah, Yonatan, Jonathan. I see.

reuset · 02/04/2017 12:25

I forgot Arik, agree Arik is great

thebakerwithboobs · 02/04/2017 12:31

OP, in southern, my husband is northern. One of our sons is Alexander-I say Alex-are-nduh and my husband says Alex-and-uh. I admit, we rarely use the full name unless he is in the shit, but it's never bothered him at all.

As for the Emmett connotations, I'm originally from Devon and previous posters are correct. Arik is great though, and Jonathan has so many potential nn which is good (I think anyway)

reuset · 02/04/2017 12:42

I'd forgotten about Emmett. I've heard it mentioned on here before

AliceKlar · 02/04/2017 14:14

I like Isolde and Isadora from your girls list
Yaron from your boys.

No one should have a problem saying Yonatan. It's easy enough to say. I know of one and he is called Yoni.

Not keen on Arik or Emmett.

ClaryBeanHorshAndMe · 02/04/2017 16:14

Isadora is fine, lovely with Clarissa (what a fine name that is).

Aww, thanks :)

thebakerwithboob
But these are still very similar pronunciations. I mean, Yo-nuh-tuhn and Tshou-nə-thən (that's supposed to be the English pronunciation... uhm yeah). Every syllable would be pronounced really differently... So, Idk.

Yes, I think it has actually put me off Emmett... Currently it's probably between Yonatan (and risk people thinking it's a creative spelling) and Jonathan (and risk confusing/upsetting the LO).
Thank you so much for commenting:)

@AliceKlar

Aww, thanks. And yes, Yoni seems like the most obvious nn to me as well. It's adorable imo :)

I don't like Isolde. That's so... Tristan and Isolde... Which, nope. The thing is, to me personally Isolda is pronunced differently, but I think that really depends on who you're asking? So, I think I have to tell DH that Isolda won't be happening.

reuset

That is off putting, I agree. I'm actually... Idk. So, nobody is thinking of Wagner when they hear Isolda? Or is it just not that negative in your opinion? I mean, I actually purposely didn't make a comment about Isolda in the OP, because I was genuinely curious about the associations in the UK....

Sophronia · 02/04/2017 16:19

I think Jonathan and either Louisa or Isadora go really well with Clarissa.

Sophronia · 02/04/2017 16:25

Emmett makes me think of the Cornish thing (and I'm not from there). I prefer the similar Everett.

AliceKlar · 02/04/2017 20:39

I agree that Yoni is cute. And if when he's older he feels it is too cutesy he can move on to Yonathan if he wants. It's a flexible name.

I love Isadora too. Think Virginia is a lovely name but has great potential for your DD getting a lot of silly name calling once she's at school.

reuset · 02/04/2017 21:05

I'll come back to Isolde/Isolda (my reference is Tristan and Isolde) but I'm popping in with a warning.

I don't think Yoni would make a good nick name. Unless it's only a Mumsnet thing, but I'm not sure it is, somebody mentioned yoni was from the Kama Sutra. Do other Mumsnetters remember Brian from Hull and the Yoni massages? Shock That's where I heard it.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 02/04/2017 21:56

reuset

I was just going to suggest the OP search yoni to see all the threads referring to it.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/04/2017 23:37

Noooooo!Grin

reuset · 03/04/2017 00:14

I knew other posters had to remember Yoni and Brian from Hull Grin Remembering all the yoni-themed name changes at the time too!

Sophronia · 03/04/2017 00:19

Yes, I thought of Yoni massage too! Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 03/04/2017 00:22

It really isn't just an MN thing.

UnderTheDesk · 03/04/2017 07:26

I LOVE Yaron.

Mainly because I used to have a colleague called Yaron who was a big handsome bear of a man and one of the nicest guys I've ever met.
So, based on my vast experience of that one Yaron, I've concluded that all Yarons are lovely and you should definitely use that.

Isadora and Isolda are both good too.

ClaryBeanHorshAndMe · 03/04/2017 09:54

Ok, I've just found the Yoni threads.... Grin
Uhm... Yeah. Idk. Yoni is basically like Johnny imo. I'm pretty sure I went to school/kindergarten with several boys nicknamed Yoni :D Oh my heck. Next time I'll meet a little Yoni I may start looking like a tomato...

But if Yoni means vagina...And seeing as Yony/Yonee/Yoni seem like an obvious nickname for Yonatan. Does this mean we shouldn't go with Yonatan? But Yona is a lovely nickname as well... But Idk, Yona could become Yoni quickly, right?

@UnderTheDesk
The Yaron I know is the same... Obewhelming evidence, all Yarons are awesome ;D

I called my mother to ask if she liked the name Isolda. Her first response was "Wagner" and that she personally wouldn't go there...

Hm... Isadora is starting to look like an even better option ;)
