Hello,

I'm in Scotland and due in 2 weeks time. These two names are our top contenders but we can't chose. Which one do people like best?

Ta!

Mhairi with a V Smile

SuperBeagle · 28/03/2017 21:15

Kiera.

I have no idea how to pronounce Mhairi though.

WankersHacksandThieves · 28/03/2017 21:21

I prefer Mairi to Mhairi - Ds1 would have been that if he'd been a girl.

With a K, i'd spell it Keira rather than Kiera though I'd spell it with a C, Ciara, if I was choosing.

Out of both names I'd go for Mairi.

Littlefish · 28/03/2017 21:29

Mhairi, pronounced with a V. I once taught a lovely Mhairi - a gorgeous child.

IrnBruTortie · 28/03/2017 21:30

DD was nearly a Mhairi, so that!
(Also love kiara though :) )

I prefer Mhairi. But Mairi (ma-ree) would be my preference.

Magpie18 · 29/03/2017 09:57

Lots of Kiera's around here (NW) - age nine & under so perhaps due to Keira Knightley? Love Mhairi though, whichever way it's pronounced

Figgygal · 29/03/2017 10:00

I grew up with a Mhairi it drives her mad she had to pronounce it for everyone gave idiots an easy insult (ma hairy arse) but I love it

museumum · 29/03/2017 10:01

I love the name Mairi.

Mhairi is a bit of a pain as no one ever knows of the person pronounces it as M or V.
Also I believe they're the same name - the h is added in Gaelic in some grammatical situations and not others.

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 29/03/2017 10:16

I was Mhairi for the first few days of my life before they registered my birth. Mum changed it because she was sick of people saying "what a lovely name, how do you spell it?"....

mm2008 · 29/03/2017 10:27

My name is Mhairi, prounced phonetically Vari. The 'Mh' create the V sound so dropping the M and putting a V before the 'H' is pointless. Also why omit an 'I'?! I love my name and have never been teased using variations of my name to suggest I'm hairy 🤦‍♀️

Mumzypopz · 29/03/2017 18:26

Both horrid, sorry.

WeeM · 29/03/2017 19:22

Yes @museumum you're right, technically Mhairi and Mairi are the same name. if you were talking directly to Mairi in Gaelic you'd add the 'h'.

Chatelherault · 29/03/2017 22:36

Mhairi - or Freya.

squoosh · 30/03/2017 01:23

Oh, wait though. Would you pronunce it the traditional way (vaari?) If so I'd spell it Mairi.

It should only be pronounced varry if there's a h after the m as the mh is pronounced as a v.

I have to say that this name irritates me a bit as there seems to be such a variation of spellings and pronunciations. I work with two women called Mhairi, one pronounces it marry and the other pronounces it varry.

Lochan · 30/03/2017 01:51

I think Mhairi is a lovely, lovely name.

Although Kiera is nice too.
