Could Bethany be shortened to Betsy / Betty?

I love the name Elizabeth and all it's possible shortenings, but it is the name of the OW, who had an affair and is now together with one of my relatives (not my marriage).

I also really like Bethany, but wonder if it could also be shortened to Betsy / Betty or not.

I know a Bethany that's shortened to Betty so yes it can be done. Although Beth is beautiful too.

Rockaby · 26/03/2017 21:31

Thanks, I like Beth and also there is the added bonus of potential nn Annie which is also nice.

Betsy is so cute !

BlackbirdSingsInTheDeadOfNight · 26/03/2017 22:04

Betsy is a lovely name. There's a beautiful little Betsy at DS's school. I think she's actually Elizabeth but is known only as Betsy, so could just as easily be Bethany for her full name.

Yes why not

1horatio · 26/03/2017 22:10

I like Beth (not a fan of Betsy, tbh).

Yes, I think it can :)

standingupforitanywhere · 26/03/2017 22:14

I know a Bethany shortened to Betty, too! Is yours auburn, Sofia?

Jooni · 27/03/2017 07:33

Yes definitely!

lornathewizzard · 27/03/2017 08:13

We have a Bethany and we use Bethy (just sorta happened and stuck) although DH does call her Betty sometimes in jest! She also gets Beth and Bethany, I like its variations. Dunno about Betsy tho tbh

Marcipex · 27/03/2017 19:21

Yes, why not, I think it works well.

Watto1 · 27/03/2017 19:23

Why don't you just have Betsy? My DS is just Alex. We weren't fussed on Alexander so had Alex on his birth certificate.

Crumbelina · 27/03/2017 19:27

I have a Betty (Elizabeth on the birth certificate) and lots of people compliment me on her name. You have great taste! Smile

I definitely think that Bethany could be shortened to Betty. I've also heard Beatrice shortened to Betty too.

originalbiglymavis · 27/03/2017 19:28

I suppose it could be whatever you want (I like Bess myself). My name is a shortened-ish version of my full name (as mispronounced by my toddler big sister).

Rockaby · 27/03/2017 19:30

Betsy is quite a particular style I think. Bethany has more options, if she didn't like Betsy when she was older. She could be Bethany, Beth, Betty, Betsy, Annie maybe.

Alex, I think is nice as a stand alone name btw. I feel the same way about Tom / Thomas (I prefer Tom on its own). Basically, I wouldn't insist on a longer version just for the hell of it iyswim. Some names are fine / better shorter.

How about Elspeth?

bobbinogs · 27/03/2017 19:32

Or Bethan, pronounced Beth Anne , lovely Welsh name

Rockaby · 27/03/2017 19:34

I love Elspeth! Bethan is nice too.

Any Welsh blood OP? Betsan could be shortened to Betty or Betsy.

Rockaby · 27/03/2017 19:37

Sadly not watto. Irish and very vaguely Scottish, I could claim a connection with, but not a drop of Welsh.

bobbinogs · 27/03/2017 19:38

Oh yes Betsan is nice, Welsh blood here....!

JaneEyre70 · 27/03/2017 19:41

We have a Bethany, though she's always been called Beth at school and now work. She gets called Betty by family though Smile.

Tinnie88 · 27/03/2017 19:55

Yes I think so. I love Betsy as a name one it's own too though, pretty but strong

JudgeJudySheidlin · 27/03/2017 20:47

I know a Bethany who's name is always shortened to Beth. She's absolutely beautiful, intelligent & funny. I'm slightly biased though.

Yes Betsy or Betty could work too. The Bethany I know was known as Bethy when she was little.
