Opinions on the name Caelan?

This is the name we are going to name our baby boy (due in 6 days!) but I suppose opinions would be nice. I do have another thread but that's for future boys names :)

Thanks :)

I prefer it spelled Caolan, but I don't mind it at all. The Caolan I know goes by Cal, which I really like.

Sunshineandlaughter · 25/03/2017 01:46

How about Caleb? That gets lots of positive reviews and sounds similar?

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/03/2017 01:51

I've heard the name quite often. I'm not overly keen. I may be wrong but I think it's a Scottish Gaelic name roughly pronounced Kellan rather than Kaylan, which is how all the ones I've come across have pronounced their name.

Sunshineandlaughter · 25/03/2017 01:54

Or Cillian?

Marcipex · 25/03/2017 04:37

I wouldn't know how to pronounce it. It looks like the beginning of Caesar to me. Id guess Seelan.

Ironwoman123 · 25/03/2017 05:00

I'm hoping that this doesn't send you into a panic so close to your baby being born but I think it needs a consonant it looks a bit bare and I don't really like the sound of it.

Sorry. I have a Caleb which is similar

Cornishmumofone · 25/03/2017 05:52

I bet you wish you hadn't asked now. I know two children called Caelan (pronounced Kaylan). They're both lovely boys from well-educated families. Neither of them has had any problems with their name.

123MothergotafleA · 25/03/2017 06:03

Why saddle the child with a silly name?
He will spend his whole life spelling it out for everyone, and he won't thank you for it.

Coldhandscoldheart · 25/03/2017 06:12

I think it's lovely, although realised I'm more familiar with the Caolan spelling. Which actually I wouldn't know how to pronounce.
Your way I would probably go for Kay-len as a pronunciation, but, then, you'll be introducing him, so people will know.

You do need to remember opinions on this board is often very conservative.

Onedaylikethi5ayear · 25/03/2017 06:13

Nope. Not a fan, even the meaning of the original spelling would put me off. This is a lifetime of having to spell out his name.

ShockedWithKnobsOn · 25/03/2017 06:18

The spelling Caelan is completely wrong. In Irish you cannot have a narrow and broad vowel like that.

floraeasy · 25/03/2017 06:21

I am in favour of plainer names, but bear in mind it's because I have an unusual name and I hated it as a child. I still have to spell it every time for people and they immediately mispronounce it. I have been seriously thinking of changing it.

Sometimes it depends on a child's personality - how he will get on with this. Some will enjoy being different, others won't.

Also, when I was young unusual names were much rarer. Now they are more widely used. That doesn't make sense, does it? I know what I mean Grin

imsodizzy · 25/03/2017 06:22

I love it, it was one of my top boys names. If I had another boy it would be a possibility again.

Melstarrynight · 25/03/2017 06:31

I like it. I'm a teacher and I wouldn't role my eyes at it.

harrietm87 · 25/03/2017 06:32

Why are you choosing to spell it that way? The correct spelling is Caolan, which is a lovely name. Caelan looks totally wrong.

MarilynWhirlwindRocks · 25/03/2017 07:14

OP,

I like it a lot Smile

I've only ever met one Caelan (a 10 year old Scottish lad; he pronounced it KAY-lun).

Yes, it may challenge people on their first spelling of it, but surely no more so than wondering which permutation of, say, Eliot/ Elliot/ Elliott to use?

Best of luck for his safe delivery Flowers

whogivesaratzass · 04/04/2017 09:34

I LOVE this name and the spelling too, it's top of my boys list. We are in Scotland though so being a twist on Callum/callan it isn't that unusual but also not too popular so fits perfect x

ExpatMrs · 04/04/2017 19:22

I know a Caelan - a very beautiful female. Can't imagine it being a boys name at all.

Minniemagoo · 04/04/2017 19:26

I know a little girl called this, not sure if it's a real name but always thought it was because her parents were trying too hard to be unique.

spiderlight · 05/04/2017 19:35

It's my godson's name. I wasn't sure when I first heard it but it's grown on me and I love it now.

icantgetnosleep5 · 07/04/2017 13:41

Awful sorry.
