Thinking of changing baby's name!

Need some help please Mummies.

My beautiful baby girl is named Holly. We spent ages going through names in the pregnancy and couldn't agree on any really! We both loved Jessica (Jessie), but sadly that is the name of my cousin who took her own life a few years ago, so it feels too close to home.

Holly came to us after baby was born in hospital. We almost went for Sienna (because I liked 'sie-sie' as a nn). Now i'm a bit unsure whether i'm liking Holly as I really love nicknames, and have been struggling to find a natural one that works other than Hols, I was thinking Holzie, but struggling to think if it works...?!

If we did change her name, other contenders have been Camilla (Cammie) or Tabitha (Tabi).. again, i'm not sure! I loved Isabel (Izzy) but my husband said no-no to that one.

We may just stick with Holly, but am feeling a bit confused in it all, so looking for some nice helpful kind advice :)

Holly is really nice :) I also like Isabel.

Well, there is Hols, Holsie, Lee, Lee-Lee etc.

Or you could use a nickname that has no connection to her given name? It seems to be a fairly common custom in the UK.

Pumple · 23/03/2017 14:47

How old is she? If she's only very young I'd just try a few names out over the course of a week or two and see if one 'sticks'. Then you could just go ahead and change it. Has her birth been registered yet?

My children's god mother and my life long friend is Holly. She is never called Holly, she has been Doll for ever.
Besides her work place she is never called Holly.
It was because she looked like a little porcelain Dolly when she was a baby.
My nickname is nothing to do with my name, yet again I am called it by everyone.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 23/03/2017 14:51

Holly is lovely, nicer than the others. 😄
Hols is nice too.

TwentyCups · 23/03/2017 14:51

Holls is used all the time as a shortening which could work.

However if you do want to change your baby's name I wouldn't go for something purely because of its nickname, I think you should really like the name itself too. Maybe change it to a name that has a nick namey feel - Rosie, Gracie, Janie, something along those lines?

drspouse · 23/03/2017 15:00

Polly? The traditional formal name for that is Mary, but of course you need not use that.

Jessie can also be a name in its own right but can be short for Jane, Jean or Janet if any of those appeal as an homage to your cousin without being so obvious (and I know a Jenny short for Janet).

We are having the same issue - we've named DD grace, and we are just not sure we love it! Funnily enough I am a Holly and Hols is my nickname....
I feel for your OP, having name doubt is all consuming!

ColourfulOrangex · 23/03/2017 16:22

My son's nickname is nothing to do with his name, I just called him it one day and it stuck Grin

I do think Holly is a pretty name, Sienna is quite nice too and I only know of one, congratulations on your little girl OP

ILikeSalmon · 23/03/2017 16:51

Holly is a lovely name.

How about Imogen (Immie)

SumAndSubstance · 23/03/2017 17:51

I always quite fancied Camilla with Millie as a nickname..

SuperBeagle · 23/03/2017 19:54

Holly is lovely.

It doesn't need to be shortened though.

buttercup54321 · 23/03/2017 19:55

Stick with Holly its lovely.

Scrumptiousbears · 23/03/2017 19:59

I don't think nick names can be forced. They come naturally and are often nothing to do with their name. My two girls names are "chip chop" and "piccalilli".

Gallavich · 23/03/2017 20:10

Holsie? Confused
Poor kid. Just call her holly. It's a really pretty name and doesn't need a nickname.

Gallavich · 23/03/2017 20:11

Oh btw sie-sie is heinous too so avoid that one

Wolfiefan · 23/03/2017 20:12

Holly is lovely.
Parents generally don't pick nicknames for a child at birth. They evolve and develop and eventually the child decides what they want to be called.
Just use the name. Not Holzie. Yuck!!

Logolphin · 23/03/2017 20:15

Lexie The Latin for Holly is Ilex.

heebiejeebie · 23/03/2017 20:15

How about Holly, nn Holl-ie?

kingscrossnoodle · 23/03/2017 20:18

Sounds like you need to grow up. You don't change a child's name because you can't think of a cute nickname for them Confused she is not a doll.

Astro55 · 23/03/2017 20:19

My nickname is nothing to do with my name

That's the point of nicknames - the rest if just shortening a name -

Swissgemma · 23/03/2017 20:29

My cousin holly is holly-Bolly

Gallavich · 23/03/2017 20:41
