Ralph?

I have never met a Ralph and I can't work out if there's something terrible about the name that I'm missing. I think Ralphie is cute for the baby years and Ralph is good for an older child and adult. What do you think?

And I'm not aware of the penis/vomit connotations!

MrsGotobed · 20/03/2017 11:53

i really don't like it, never have, seems really pretentious ...same here. It falls into the category of Ptolemy and Tarquin for me.

Funnily enough there was a misbehaving Ralph/Rafe in a shop this morning - mother kept calling "Rafe-ee don't run off/ Raf-ee come back" etc and darling little Rafe-ee was ignoring her.

hoddtastic · 20/03/2017 12:06

i quite like Raphael and Rafferty though? Ralph is an unpleasant sound, doesn't have nice connotations, doesn't look nice written down, and reminds me of Harry Cross's interfering mate from Brookside. :D

BasicBetty · 20/03/2017 14:58

I know a 5 yr old Ralph. Really cool name.

ThePug · 20/03/2017 16:04

I have a 13 month old Ralph. It suits him and people generally love his name when they meet him. He gets called Ralphie a lot (by us & others) which is cute for now. I'm a few years too young for the book reference, never watched the Simpsons and do not live in a part of the country where it means vomit, or anything else as far as I'm aware. It's a nice, normal, not overused boys name as far as I'm concerned Smile

Beachedwh4le · 20/03/2017 16:19

I've fallen in love with rafe but DH has deemed it pretentious. Though considering we have a Fox and an Atticus I would have thought that ship had sailed Grin

Rafe over ralph and Rory over Casper

JoeyJoeJoeJuniorShabadu · 20/03/2017 16:23

Awful name. Please pick something else.

Izzyathome · 20/03/2017 18:19

Love Ralph. Cool, classic and vintage all at once. Also love the baby name Ralphie. I don't think of it as pretentious at all, more in line with cool old-guy names like Stan and Fred. (While I remember 'Forever' I wouldn't at all make that connection on meeting someone called Ralph, I honestly don't think other people would either, in real life). Definitely go for it!

Jaimx86 · 20/03/2017 18:32

I love the name Ralph! I hope that it doesn't catch on too much, as I'd like to use it myself.

EpoxyResin · 20/03/2017 18:42

Another lover here; might use it myself! It's definitely on the list with Rory and Ruaridh. I've known one Ralph and have a massive "in a different life we might have been together" kind of crush on him - he's such a good guy!

I also think the Rafe pronunciation is a bit "yah" (I.e. pretentious).

Jemimapuddleduk · 20/03/2017 18:48

I know 2 little Ralph's. I think it's s fab name.

1nsanityscatching · 20/03/2017 19:00

I love the name pronounced Rafe, reminds me of that Nigel Havers series The Charmer

ashleighxoxo · 20/03/2017 19:51

I really like Ralph! I'm 37+4 and was considering it but DH doesn't like it

NotYoda · 20/03/2017 19:53

I much prefer Raphael or Ray

Ralph does make me think of puking.

n0ne · 20/03/2017 20:44

I'm considering Ralph (prob spelt Ralf as that's the usual way in my adopted country) if this baby is a boy.

spiney · 20/03/2017 21:09

Love love love.

I know a great 12 year called Ralph. Such a lovely, chilled kid.

I think it's cute for a child but also cool and strong for an adult. Quirky but distinguished. And not too many of them around.

Also Ralph in Lord of the Flies is a great character.

CaoNiMartacus · 20/03/2017 21:30

Ralph always strikes me as a "joke" name for some reason.

EpoxyResin · 21/03/2017 12:00

Dp says no to Ralph. He, like other posters, said it sounds like the noise you make when you're being sick. I honestly never ever would have thought that. OP, I still think it's great!

Mu123 · 21/03/2017 12:38

Its my dd's dads name, after 15 years of knowing him his names neither here nor there for me, I dont particularly like it but it doesnt annoy me. Mind you, it was a strange name as a teenager
