Opinions on double barrelled first names

My boyfriend really likes the name Chloe-Grey as a double barrelled first name but I'm not too sure. I wouldn't mind Grey as a middle name though.

I don't mind them but in reality the second name doesn't end up being used very often. I have a few friends with them and nearly always refer to them as the first name, along with everyone else. If you like it go for it, but be prepared it may end up shortened.

justdontevenfuckingstart · 17/03/2017 20:22

Just choose one name. It's easier at school and on forms and in the future.

Zephyroux1 · 17/03/2017 20:23

I don't think it works really-sorry! I think she'll spend her life correcting people who think Grey is her surname!

PollyBanana · 17/03/2017 20:24

It's quite difficult to say, doesn't run together well

user1483387154 · 17/03/2017 20:24

I really don't like hyphenated names.

Nonameyet1 · 17/03/2017 20:24

Not a great fan of two names, I don't mind a good classic of Sarah-Jane but the modern twists are not really for me.

Not keen on them

SuperBeagle · 17/03/2017 20:36

My DD2 is Lily Rose. No hyphen, but both are her first name.

I like them, depending on the names, but I don't like the hyphen.

SuperBeagle · 17/03/2017 20:36

I do agree that the second name doesn't get used much. We refer to ours as Lily or LR (initials) 90% of the time.

emilybrontescorset · 17/03/2017 20:37

I agree that it sounds like her full name.
Also there is the association with a certain Mr Grey, I don't think your oh has thought find through.

DizzyDigestive · 17/03/2017 20:37

Just use Grey as her middle name

TanteJeanne · 17/03/2017 20:58

Not a fan of the double barrelled first name. I like Chloe. I love Grey. I like Chloe with Grey as a middle name. But not Chloe-Grey.

Hate them personally, they are bearable when little but I find them quite ridiculous on an adult.

ILikeSalmon · 17/03/2017 21:18

I despise double barrel names

Very chavvy

Always a mouthful

Wolfiefan · 17/03/2017 21:20

I'm sorry but they always remind me of the awful US term trailer trash. Blush

Wolfiefan · 17/03/2017 21:24

Why two threads? Layla Grey is no better!

WyfOfBathe · 17/03/2017 21:31

I think with a hyphenated name the second part needs to be clearly a first name, so Chloe-Anne Smith is ok, but Chloe-Grey Smith sounds like Chloe Grey-Smith or just Chloe Grey.

WyfOfBathe · 17/03/2017 21:33

The only one I like is Mary-Jane. MJ for short. Spider-Man fan
We considered Mary Jane as a double middle name, but avoided it because of the marijuana links Wink Other than that I like it.

SuperBeagle · 17/03/2017 21:49

Mary-Jane is well known slang for marijuana. Poor kid! Shock

I have a hyphenated name, no middle name. I've never had any problems

NuffSaidSam · 17/03/2017 21:56

I don't like them. Occasionally you hear one that is ok, but generally no. They're a bit pointless because the second bit always gets dropped eventually.

Chloe-Grey is awful because Grey is a surname.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 17/03/2017 22:03

My name is hyphenated but I only ever use it in full on certificates or job applications. Most people dont know it's hyphenated. I actually prefer the second part of my name to the first but I've always been called the first part so it would be weird to change now. Funnily enough my nickname has always been the (much longer) masculine version of the first part of my name.
