My husband is half Norwegian/half Danish, I am Swedish. Just 3 weeks ago we moved to England and will be here for at least 2 years (husbands work)

I am 32 weeks pregnant, sex unknown.

We have 3 children- Rasmus is 9, Severin is 7 and Annelie is 4.

We need names that are good in Swedish, Norwegian and Danish and now English. Which of these sound good to the English ear?

Janiston that's quite an unpleasant thing to say, especially as the OP didn't ask for your opinion on the names they already have. As others have pointed out, the names are perfectly "normal" in their countries of origin.

OP I would chose Lars and Ingrid. Lovely names.

CakeRattleandRoll · 18/03/2017 15:27

My favourites are:
Lars and Konrad
Inga, Ingrid and Ester

BellMcEnd · 18/03/2017 15:30

Love Viggo and Ingrid.

Your other children's names are ace, too

BellMcEnd · 18/03/2017 15:31

I also love Soren - just thought I'd throw that one in!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 19/03/2017 11:49

Magda Gustav

SwedishEdith · 19/03/2017 11:55

BOYS:
Peer - works but is an actual word.
Ebbe - not sure
Gerhard - like
Konrad - love
Viggo - love
Niklas - love
Lasse - like
Lars - like
Gustav - love
Helge - not sure
Knut - pronunciation may be an issue
Gunnar - works

GIRLS:
Dagmar - bit harsh
Magda - like
Gunda - not sure
Hildegard - not sure
Gudrun - works
Ester - like
Inga - like
Brita - like
Hella - like
Ingrid - like
Thora - pronunciation may be an issue. Thora = old-fashioned. Is Tora a viable alternative?
Helga - bit heavy-footed matronly name but won't matter for 2 years

SwedishEdith · 19/03/2017 12:05

Yes, I love Severin as well - wanted that myself.

Frida, Lena, Nina/Tina, Asa.
Patrik, Tomas.

Batteriesallgone · 19/03/2017 12:08

Adding my voice to people saying don't use Knut.

The others are lovely - I knew a very attractive Lars once Grin

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 19/03/2017 12:09

IMO the names from your lists that will work best in English are;

Lars
Viggo
Konrad
Niklas

Ingrid
Thora
Ester

Although if you only plan to be in the U.K. for 2 years, any name should be fine really. You wouldn't need to worry about other children making fun of the name at least - not for a baby.

Unless you are likely to stay in UK for more than 2 years, it's probably not worth worrying about whether names work in English. But my thoughts would be :

Knut - no way, too close, in spelling to cunt which is considered very rude in English
Helge - sounds a bit too much like Helga which is a recognisable girl's name.

Dagmar - personally I would avoid as dag is an insult in Australia (means something like sheep poo) but it probably wouldn't be an issue except among people who watch to much Neighbours.
Ester - will get misspelled frequently if you are concerned about this
Brita - water filters
Hella - maybe a bit close to Hell? But that has never stopped people calling girls Helen.

deste · 19/03/2017 12:47

Hella sounds like Ella so I don't see the problem. I like Ester especially, agree with others no Knut. He would be teased and called nutcase.

PunkAssMoFo · 19/03/2017 15:02

Konrad and ingrid are lovely.

crapfatbanana · 19/03/2017 18:45

Viggo, Konrad or Gustav

Ester or Ingrid

crapfatbanana · 19/03/2017 18:51

Janiston - what on earth are you wittering on about? The OP wants names that work in the U.K. and in Scandinavia. You might not be familiar with them but they are real names.

Love your children's names, Severin is fab.

BOYS:
Peer - is it pronounced as it looks as in to rhyme with beer? Doesn't sound 'like a name' to my English ear but that's only because I've not encountered it before. Doesn't sound unpleasant.
Ebbe - not keen (just my opinion)
Gerhard - again, not keen
Konrad - sounds great, may have to remind people to spell with K not C
Viggo - love this
Nicklas - great
Lasse - think a lot of English people would mispronounce as either 'lass' or 'lassie'
Lars - love this
Gustav - sure
Helge - no
Knut - no
Gunnar - this would work

GIRLS:
Dagmar - doesn't sound a 'pretty' name to my ear,
Magda - lovely, I know a Spanish Magda too
Gunda - not keen
Hildegard - recognise this, not overly keen
Gudrun - no
Ester - nice
Inga- lovely
Brita - lovely
Hella - it's quite pretty but makes me think of 'hella good' /hell of a ...
Ingrid - Beautiful, my favourite of your girls list
Thora - also an English name though more associated with old ladies I think, nice though and older names are popular now. Does make me think 'thorax'
Helga - most brits would have heard this name before, I think it's seen as quite a stereotypical German/Scandinavian name though.

BasicBetty · 21/03/2017 13:09

Great lists!
I really like Gustav and Lars.
And Ingrid and Thora.
