Baxter and Brewster were the female forms of Baker and Brewer I think. I don't see them catching on for girls' names!

BitOutOfPractice · 15/03/2017 09:00

What a fabulous thread

Goldsmith and Silversmith.

Strange isn't it that Goldsmith is a well known surname, Silversmith not so much

user1489567377 · 15/03/2017 09:11

I know a boy Baxter

ErrolTheDragon · 15/03/2017 09:29

Oh, that's interesting, bakewell - presumably likewise Kempster (wool comber) and Webster (weaver) . 'homeley' trades.

Pencilvester · 15/03/2017 09:39

I wonder if there are any 'trade names' which might be considered appropriate for a girl?

Sadly, there have been recent reports of little girls in America being named things like Sawyer and Sailor.

RakingUpBadMemories · 15/03/2017 09:43

I love Sailor Blush I also like Miller.

Some people are so uptight about names. I'm a teacher and we get all sorts. Nobody cares, the kids don't bat an eyelid unless it rhymes with something dirty and and it's really not that important in the grand scheme of things.

Trade names for a girl: the Beckhams certainly put Harper on the radar.

Er... newtwatname and others thanks for the enthusiasm, but I feel we may be losing sight of the original point, which was listing Ye Olde Careers that people are now using as FIRST NAMES.

Go start your own thread to debate the merits of Accoucheuse 😋

Where I live these sort of names are quite popular. I remember shortly after moving ds joined a football team, and many names from this list were on the back of shirts (including Hunter, Cooper, Tanner, Mason, Carter, Parker and even Thatcher). I assumed that they were surnames until ds got his shirt made up. Feels weird to me, like a bunch of public school boys, I can't imagine calling my children names like these (girls get them too, just less occupation orientated).
