Scottish boy names

Not far off having a boy and we just can't agree on names or find something we love. I find girls names soooo much easier!

We'd like something not overly popular (so not Logan, Harris, Finlay, Alexander etc)

Some names we've considered:
Ruairidh (p/n roo-ree)
Coll (I like, him not so much)
Struan (I'm not so keen)
Alasdair (he's not keen)
Conall

Blair - we both quite like this but would love to hear opinions on using it with s/n Muir

Feel free to provide other options :-)

Cullen
Moray

Douglas is due for a revival too.

dementedma · 14/03/2017 21:59

I love the Cornish version of Peter which is Petroc. Great name. ( Auto corrected to petrochemical!)

BoysaDearyMe · 14/03/2017 22:02

Laird

TeacupDrama · 14/03/2017 22:17

There are rules in Scottish Gaelic re vowels for example you can't have an "a" before the constantant and an "i" after it so you can't spell it we ruaridh but you can spell it ruairidh, the same rules would make Alasdair correct but Alisdair wrong . If you have roots which are Scottish Gaelic you don't want folks telling you you have spelt it wrong, the way you wrote it in OP as "Ruaridh" is the best way unless completely anglised, Murdo is a more unusual name apart from in the western isles where it is common in older generations but not so popular now

We're Scottish and I find Scottish names a bit dull unfortunately (though many are nice). We looked at Irish names as well and considered:

Conn
Conlan
Cormac
Cillian

cantdecide17 · 19/03/2017 20:22

Another one we're considering is Oran ('song' in Gaelic).

Again would you use it with Muir (here is where we see who the Weegie's are - and no we don't live in Glasgow)

Corin, Innes, Murray, Nairn.

Singingforsanity · 19/03/2017 23:27

I'm with pp who said the 'a' isn't silent in Ruairidh, here (NE Scotland) it's usually pronounced Rooa-ree or Rooa-ray. Great name though.

Oran is better with Muir than Blair I think but I wouldn't put them together personally, I think it sounds too much like one word.

TheDuckSaysMoo · 19/03/2017 23:35

Oran Muir - no way - not if you ever plan to live in Glasgow Smile

FartnissEverbeans · 20/03/2017 08:33

No, can't have Oran Muir! Grin

tabulahrasa · 20/03/2017 08:37

I'm not Glaswegian and I still know what Oran Mor is...so um, no, lol

inlectorecumbit · 20/03/2017 08:37

anyone mention Craig?
derived from the Scottish Gaelic word creag, meaning "rock

Nemesia · 20/03/2017 08:46

Out of all of the above i love Campbell Muir the best. A very strong sounding name.

TheDuckSaysMoo · 21/03/2017 09:29

Tabulah - it's the pub / event space at the top of byres road.

tabulahrasa · 21/03/2017 13:22

I know, I don't live in Glasgow and it was the first thing I thought of was what I meant.

cantdecide17 · 21/03/2017 13:52

Thanks everyone. We'd thought it was a no-go but just wanted to get a wider consensus before writing it off completely.

Blair Muir sounds like an estate agents!

Cameron
Campbell
Corin
Angus
Dugald

TheDuckSaysMoo · 21/03/2017 14:06

Sorry, tabulah, I completely misread your post.

EsmeWeatherwax · 21/03/2017 14:07

Thomas
Alexander
Colin
Malcolm
Scott
Callum
Ross
My maiden name is Muir, that's my dads entire family! GrinBlair sounds horrible with Muir, as does Kerr or any other place name/surname type of name. It's such a Scottish sounding name I think it's quite difficult to pair a Gaelic Scots name with it.

PutThatPomBearBack · 21/03/2017 14:42

SpudGrin

Teammck05 · 21/03/2017 14:51

We have a Ruairidh, never had anyone pronounce it wrong. Yeah some folk have difficulty spelling it but not his family or teachers. He likes his name too. Also have a Ross.
Also really like the name Roddy, but third child was a wee girl.

diddl · 21/03/2017 14:59

Did you discount Sholto, Op?

Best name suggested by far imo.
