Sofithia is actually rather pretty, isn't it?

Gummibears · 09/03/2017 12:15

I wonder there are rules about how old a name has to be? Do the registrar offices have lists?

Because all names were once made up.....

ClaryIsTheBest · 09/03/2017 12:18

gummi

idk. Where I live there are official naming rules... Names have to be "real" names, shortenings aren't allowed (Annie or Rosie wouldn't fly...) and offensive names wouldn't be allowed either (you couldn't name your boy Mussolini, for example. Not that most sane, decent people would want to do that, I think...).

But I don't really knwo when a name becomes "real". Or stops being real, I guess...

HopefullyDothButterNoParsnips · 09/03/2017 12:19

Sofithia reminds me of Forsythia - the weird virus drug in Contagion.

I like Aspen and Juniper. Those would be my picks. Our niece is called Primrose.

Rockaby · 09/03/2017 12:19

There are rules Gummi, but (I think - non expert here), as long as the name wouldn't be in some way harmful to the child I think you can call them anything you like in the U.K. In Poland, a polish friend once told me, they have (long) lists of names and you can't pick anything else.

Please never call a child Mireille, she might turn out to be like the only Mireille I have ever met who is a sad excuse for a human being.

00100000 , I think you have found your calling in life, though I have to point out that Caster, though sweet( hee hee ) goes with Pollux and has done for several thousand years.

I think Anaglypta is due a revival.........

ClaryIsTheBest · 09/03/2017 12:25

Sofithia reminds me of Fosythia as well. THe pretty yellow spring flowers.

I didn't know it was a virus... ;(

Knifegrinder · 09/03/2017 12:25

And Caster Semenya exists.

ClaryIsTheBest · 09/03/2017 12:26

Caster sounds like Castor (oil)

Rockaby · 09/03/2017 12:27

"New Zealand, like the UK, has few controls on the names parents can choose, but Pat and Sheena Wheaton were banned from registering their son as 4Real as names beginning with numbers are forbidden. He's now Superman instead"

Shock From BBC article! Wow, talk about a name being a lot to live up to!

ClaryIsTheBest · 09/03/2017 12:31

And here I know a guy whose parents had to go to court to name him "nico", seeing as officials thought it was short for Nicola/s.

And in Newzealand people named their son Superman. It would be rather facinating of he changed his name to William or something the day he turns 18.

Saltedcaramel2016 · 09/03/2017 12:36

Evangeline
Coralie
Cicely

00100001 · 09/03/2017 12:37

I humbly withdraw "Caster"

Grin
RakingUpBadMemories · 09/03/2017 12:38

Perienne is actually rather lovely, Binary.

Wynn, on the other hand, is already a name (I know one), and so is Thera.

Rockaby · 09/03/2017 12:39

Clary

According to the article, since 1984 there have been two baby boys named Superman and six named Gandalf in th UK too, so it's not just NZ! I wonder if they've kept their names or changed to something more ordinary, like you say. Would be interested to know. Maybe a former Superman is now on MN!

00100001 · 09/03/2017 12:42

Darn! There's me thinking I'm "very" unique with those names... Withdrawn!

So I shalla dd the following three:

Caelion
Aensel
Calemie

Garnethair · 09/03/2017 12:45

I'm loving these made up names. You should sell them to a drugs company that creates contraceptives.

ClaryIsTheBest · 09/03/2017 12:46

Gandalf is kind of cool :) It is certainly better than Superman, imo ;)

Maybe.

Parents name their daughter Hecate and she changes her name to Emme, for example. Would be interesting.

But tbh, my name is probably in the "hecate" category (it's a real name but very rarely used...) and I didn't change it. (sorry, can't say the name. I'd honestly out myself)

Rockaby · 09/03/2017 12:54

Agreed; Gandalf is definitely better than Superman! No wonder it's three times as commonly used then Wink.

Rockaby · 09/03/2017 12:56

Of 001's amazing lists, I'd go for Beatrey Grin. It's actually quite cute, like a nn fur Beatrix.

ClaryIsTheBest · 09/03/2017 12:58

001's list? Keladria or Cordilie, probably ;)

NapQueen · 09/03/2017 12:59
