We're thinking Keira. I just wanted to get an idea how this name is perceived as we aren't telling anyone IRL until she arrives Smile thank you.

Oh no Foodie, not the C word!!! Shock

In my mind, I wouldn't group it with those other names you mentioned but maybe I'm blinkered by my love for the name.

I love the name Keira. In Taiwanese it means 'Little Moon'

SuperBeagle · 27/02/2017 09:46

I like Keira. Smile

I never know whether the "correct" spelling is Keira or Kiera, but I'd automatically spell it Keira if I didn't know otherwise, so that's the spelling I'd choose!

GreenTrafficLights · 27/02/2017 09:50

It's a tiny bit dated to my ears but otherwise totally inoffensive.

foodiefil · 27/02/2017 22:24

I'm sorry lovely Confused just go with what you like, ignore the rest of us... (don't go for Tracy)

hoddtastic · 28/02/2017 00:00

i know quite a few, it's not my favourite, i had a friend at school (in the 70s called Kiera and it was glam, now it's not really glam and is a bit tries not to say the word)

if you insist spell it Ciara though?

hoddtastic · 28/02/2017 00:01

for me, with the K spelling it goes with Keely, Kayleigh, Kelsey, Chelsea. Paige, Maddison etc.

reuset · 28/02/2017 00:33

I don't think Keira is 'chavvy' though to say I think the use of that word is a bit off is understatement. It is very popular still (combined) and there are at least four different spellings.

The spelling would be a real pain for me though, but your chosen spelling is the most popular version, and the name of the actress, Keira Knightley, so slightly easier perhaps.

I'm afraid that word is the first one that comes to my mind too.Blush In fact I was trying to work out how to word it more gently when I saw Foodie's post and your response. I'm not convinced that an alternative spelling would be all that much of an improvement.

Having said that, it's not one of those names where I'd immediately think the parents were awful... and in teaching, I've come across a few of those names!

reuset · 28/02/2017 02:52

Well you know what they say about people who stoop to use the 'c' word. Wink

RuthB4 · 28/02/2017 03:01

Beautiful! One of my best friends is Kiara. She spells it the Irish way. She gets called Ki or Kiki by her nephews and nieces!

MACaddict5 · 28/02/2017 09:33

Well this thread has definitely taken a turn for the worse. (Except for your lovely comment Ruth)

I certainly am not a chav by any means, nor is DH and I'm surprised that some think this name is chavvy. It's not the nicest of connotations and I'd be saddened to think people had thought we'd picked a chavvy name. Not sure what to do now Confused

MAC, there's nothing wrong with Keira. It's a perfectly acceptable name.

You could always consider something like Chiara (pronounced like Kiara), or the Irish spelling of Keira which is Ciara. A lot of people don't like the letter K and associate it with 'low class' names (which is bullshit...).

user1484066668 · 28/02/2017 10:27

One of my best friends is a 'Ciara'. Gorgeous name and I actually prefer your spelling

foodiefil · 28/02/2017 18:21

If you were Irish/had Irish family and it was Ciara - that's not chavvy although I still don't think it's a wonderful name.

I suppose it depends on what you associate it with - Keira for me is Keira Knightley and naming your child after a celebrity is naff/chavvy/common which is why I think chavvy when I read Keira.

I don't know what they say about people who use the word 'chavvy'. I can imagine though. It was obviously very polite for you to put that so subtly though. I almost missed it wink face 🙄

mrscrocopop · 28/02/2017 18:56

Kiera is a lovely name OP. I don't think it's chavvy at all & I also don't associate it with Kayleigh etc. It's also refreshing - I don't know a single baby Kiera. Xx

agnes158 · 28/02/2017 20:16

I like it, it's very pretty

MACaddict5 · 01/03/2017 10:31

We've made a decision and we're going for it. I know we'll never please everyone with a name and yes, the views on here are mixed but there are more positive than negative. I really appreciate the feedback and I think it's cemented how much we love the name. Thank you all.

I don't know what they say about people who use the word 'chavvy'.

Don't you? Well it's quite an insulting term. Usually, though not confined entirely, to describe a sector of the lower classes. The bright sparks who still bandy the term around, well, that's a bit unpleasant actually. It's also lazy vocabulary.

Sorry for slight derail, OP.

reuset · 01/03/2017 10:58

Oops, good choice, OP. Glad to hear you haven't been put off using it.

foodiefil · 01/03/2017 13:23

No. You can be 'lower class' - as you put it - and not be chavvy.

You can be quite wealthy and be chavvy.

Yours,
Working class northerner. Not a chav.

reuset · 01/03/2017 13:34

Read my post properly. It makes all the difference Wink I even put 'usually' in italics

Usually, though not confined entirely

Like I say it's unpleasant both ways, and the bright sparks who use the term.

reuset · 01/03/2017 13:36

And I said a 'sector' not an entire class. Nor did I mention northerners.

Comprehension skills - could do better I think

TwentyCups · 01/03/2017 13:38

I love it. I would pronounce Ciara as Cee-air-ah like the singer! Totally different names to me.
