Thanks Smile

We just can't decide! Jorge or Nicolas?

Nicolas

Oysterbabe · 25/02/2017 09:56

Is Jorge pronounced the same as George? If so, unless you're from or connected to a country where Jorge is the normal spelling, I'd go for George.

BlueSand2017 · 25/02/2017 09:56

No, it's pronounced differently.

It depends, Jorge as in Jor-ge or Jorge as in Hor-hay?
I like Jorge the Portuguese way but not keen on the Spanish way.
So Jorge if it's like George but Nicolas if it's like hor-hay.

thebakerwithboobs · 25/02/2017 09:57

If you help us out and tell us how it's pronounced we can give an opinion....

BikeRunSki · 25/02/2017 09:57

Are you from a country where those are the conventional spellings?

If it were George or Nicholas, I'd chose Nicholas.

SallyGinnamon · 25/02/2017 09:58

Not hor-hay. Too much potential for name games in teens.

rollonthesummer · 25/02/2017 09:58

If you're in England-I would say neither. They will constantly be spelt or pronounced incorrectly. I love both George and Nicholas though.

BlueSand2017 · 25/02/2017 09:59

Zhor-zhe (we would pronounce it similar to that Smile)

Nicolas

Rockaby · 25/02/2017 10:00

I love Jorge the way you've just said you would pronounce it OP. Really lovely far nice room than George.

Rockaby · 25/02/2017 10:00

Nicer* not 'nice on' Hmm at autocorrect.

Rockaby · 25/02/2017 10:00

Nice room even! Ffs I give up. My phone hates me clearly.

SaudadeObama · 25/02/2017 10:14

I would steer well clear of foreign names that are too different. We have a Thiago and a Mateus. People in England had no trouble but Zhor-zag is a real mouth full for England. If he's going to school in England he will just grow up saying "just call me George". I'd go with Nicolas Jorge.

Fairylea · 25/02/2017 10:16

If you're in England I would steer clear of Jorge unless you want it pronounced George as that's how everyone will end up saying it, even if you correct them.

My daughter has a Greek name and it's very similar to a name in the Uk and everyone just calls her by a nickname as they can't get their head around it being different.

Frazzled2207 · 25/02/2017 10:18

If you're in England definitely Nicholas

Oysterbabe · 25/02/2017 10:19

Will your child be growing up in the UK?

SaudadeObama · 25/02/2017 10:20

On the other hand if you're planning to move then go with Jorge. Zhor-zhe is clearly a preference and nicer than the Hor-hay that I heard in Mexico. I assume your Spanish speaking, which kind of Spanish do you speak?

EweAreHere · 25/02/2017 10:23

I prefer Nicolas.

BlueSand2017 · 25/02/2017 10:28

We're originally from Portugal.

I actually love Jorge with the Portuguese pronunciation and think it's much easier for your average English speaker to handle than the Spanish way. Probably because I know a lovely Portuguese Jorge and everyone seems fine with his name.

We had a Spanish Jorge at work for a while and my boss constantly called him Jor-Gay. It's was awful.

llangennith · 25/02/2017 10:38

Agree with others to avoid Jorge as a first name if your son is going to be brought up in UK.
Nicholas Jorge is the better option.

BlueSand2017 · 25/02/2017 10:42

It won't be Nicholas...

OP posts:
SaudadeObama · 25/02/2017 10:44

We're originally from Portugal.

Confused I thought all Portuguese speakers pronounced Jorge like Jor-je! Are you from the Spanish border? Interesting!

Frazzled2207 · 25/02/2017 10:51

Nicolas is also fine though will invariably be spelt with the H by some...
