Is Aspen too out there?

I really love the name Aspen - just concerned it's going to be met with negativity.

Also like

Audrey
Harper
Sienna
Scarlett
Cora

And a bunch of others but keep coming back to this one!

What's the general consensus?

I don't think it's posh at all. Quite the opposite, actually.

I don't like it, and I'd think it odd to meet an Aspen whose family had no ski/mountain/Colorado connection.

I like all of the other names on your list (except Harper) more than Aspen.

Sophronia · 24/02/2017 20:36

It makes me think of Aspie too.

MesmereldaM · 24/02/2017 20:37

I would have assumed it was a boys name.

Rockaby · 24/02/2017 21:38

I'm not keen, sorry. Just my personal taste etc and clearly lots of other posters like it.

It's similar to being called Chanel or Armani in my mind, and those names aren't to my taste really.

Aspen is well known as an upmarket / 'posh' resort, so I'd wonder if people might think I had chosen the name to reflect how upmarket I was, if that makes sense. It sounds a bit, (I hate this phrase sorry, but I can't think of a better way to describe it in this case), 'try hard' to my ears.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 24/02/2017 21:44

OP, isn't Aspen a boys name ?
I like it very much.

Buntysoven · 25/02/2017 00:10

I think tree which is lovely. After all you can have Willow Rowan Ash Cherry so why not Aspen? I know it's a ski resort but as a pp said that's named after the tree! Beautiful name.

FreeNiki · 25/02/2017 01:42

Nice buy see it as a boys name after it was used by that gay couple with the surrogate twins.

The try hard comment puts me off. The other points I can deal with. I wouldn't have grouped it with the like of Chanel or those kind of names but if I heard someone named their daughter Chanel I would definitely judge. (Just being honest).

I'll think it over. I thought DH would immediately veto Aspen but he is surprisingly up for it.

Thanks again for the comments. It is so tricky with names how some just generate a gut reaction and others are fine isn't it!

Sorry but I think it's quite common sounding. Along the lines of "London" "Brooklyn" and "Chelsea" and so on.

lizzieoak · 25/02/2017 06:28

I like Audrey, Scarlett and Cora.

Aspen makes me think of Colorado so seems an odd choice. To me Harper is a surname and Sienna sounds like the name of a car (in addition to the city).

Raisinbrain · 25/02/2017 06:43

I like it. I would assume it was a boy though at first.

heron98 · 25/02/2017 07:04

well, technically it's a tree not a name, but if you were to use it I would assume it was a male name.

BigGreenOlives · 25/02/2017 07:09

Aspen makes me think of ski resorts & the tree. I would think you had conceived your daughter there or had your honeymoon in the resort. I wouldn't think it was posh, I'd think the opposite, it sounds as if someone was trying to think of someone posh.

However I wouldn't say anything in real life, I'd just say 'How pretty' if you asked me so as not to hurt your feelings.

Nospringflower · 25/02/2017 07:18

I quite like it but would think it was a boy and also a bit place name (didnt know it was a tree) like Brooklyn / skii resort and so people thinking you conceived on a ski holiday!!

stuckinthehouse · 25/02/2017 07:59

Dumb and Dumber was the first thing that came to mind.

And I taught a male Espen last year so would have assumed Aspen was also a boy's name.

I do like it though despite my initial thoughts!

lostlalaloopsy · 25/02/2017 08:00

I've never heard it as a name before but I really like it. You should go for it!

Lemondrop09 · 25/02/2017 09:57

I think Aspen is fine for a name. It's unusual without being crazy. I think it can work for a girl.

I think the ski resort connection is tenuous at best, and even if people thought that the first time they hear it, once it's attached to a child, they'll forget it. It's not a terrible connotation anyway.

The only negative I can think of is the shorteneted version Asp? Venemous snake.

namechange20050 · 25/02/2017 10:04

I'm not a fan. It's a lovely tree but for a girls name I think it seems quite try hard. It's a bit Hunter/Archer/Harrison territory. People thinking they are being posh, but getting it wrong IYSWIM.

wobblywonderwoman · 25/02/2017 10:08

I love your other choices more. Sienna is really pretty. Audrey is also really lovely. Elegant sounding.

Philoslothy · 25/02/2017 10:11

I know two Aspens, both girls. They are both families we knew growing up so absolutely not posh in any way.

FreeNiki · 25/02/2017 10:11

There's also the drug factor...

Aspen sounds a bit like aspirin
Sienna a bit like senna

The rest are nice. Haven't met any scarlets.

Ilovewillow · 25/02/2017 10:13

I like all your names and Aspen is pretty. It makes me think of the tree. My favourite from your list would be Audrey.

reuset · 25/02/2017 10:52

I don't think it's posh at all. Quite the opposite, actually.

Agree. A voice of reason Grin I was getting a bit worried about the overall positivity towards the name until this point. I thought I'd wandered into the wrong forum.

It's a tree, or a surname.

Oysterbabe · 25/02/2017 11:02

I immediately thought tree too. Maybe go for Leylandii, it's more British.

Philoslothy · 25/02/2017 12:26

There is nothing wrong in a name not being posh. None of my children have posh names . However if you wanted a posh name I don't think Aspen is one to go for
