I'm not pregnant but am just wondering made their final decision. Was it a name that you've always liked? Or was it your partners choice?. My boys all have quite 'dated' names according to some, but I love them all because they're all different.

My DD has a name from a Shakespeare play, the opening scene of which was allegedly set in the country of her birth.

NotFromAJedi · 24/02/2017 16:46

My DC all have 'different' first names (not top 100 types) and then a family name in the middle :) I tend to find older generations (really old) tend not to like our choices- which does hurt a little as I think they're wonderful.. but that's what you get if you don't name kids usual names x

We wanted a Scottish but not Gaelic name.
Quite easy for a boy, tricky for a girl. Thankfully ds was a boy.

dustarr73 · 24/02/2017 23:07

I have 5 boys and it was always me who picked the names. But the names had to go together.Plus not called after anyone in immediate family. As to me all kids deserve their own name.

1st ds was a name i always loved but became quite popular when he was born.[dylan]

Ds2 has an out there name but it suits him.[kiefer]

Ds3 a name that hadnt even thought of,but it suits him down to the ground.[ryan]

Ds4 is after a Xmen[Logan]
Ds5 was a name i had on the others but it just felt right this time[Zak]

They're all so lovely and thought out :)

Named after the midwife

DS1 would literally be a Boy Named Sue in that case Grin

With both my boys, they were the only names that we both agreed on. My ex wasn't even all that keen on DS2's name (liked it but said it was a pet's name! He loves it now he's used to it) but out of all the boys names in the world that I liked it was the only one he agreed was acceptable.

When I was pregnant with DS1, I dreamed that I went for a scan. They told me all was okay, how many weeks I was, that it was a boy, and that his name was David. In my dream I was marvelling at the modern technology that was so accurate it could even give you the name Grin. I suppose if this were actually possible it would save a lot of discussion and arguments!

p.s. I did not call DS1 David.

TheTartOfAsgard · 25/02/2017 00:36

Both my dc were named after my favourite book characters, I picked them out when I was 9 or 10. I convinced exh that he'd chosen them 😂

BoboBunnyH0p · 26/02/2017 20:00

Both my DCs have a long and imo beautiful middle names (both could easily have been their first names) this is because I feel my middle name was plain and very much a filler name of my generation, like Rose and Mae/May has been in recent years.

Our DD is named because a very famous sportsperson decided to cheat on his wife and once I heard her name, I absolutely fell in love with it and this was years before I even my DH. My heart was set on it if I ever had a DD. The name should get quite easy to guess and people find it funny if we get asked the story behind the name Smile

timeforheroes · 26/02/2017 20:11

DS - We watched a tv programme whilst I was in labour and I liked one of the character's names which was actually native to DH's family's country of origin, thought it was uncommon but not bizarre, DH dismissed it as we had already got 2 names to decide from. Thing is one was his choice that I hated, and one was my choice that he hated. When DS arrived (after some drama) DH just said he thought we should call him "tv character name". He's now said in hindsight that he only said it because he felt sorry for me... Hmm I LOVE our son's name, and we often get positive comments. Obviously no one has told us they hate it, I imagine some do!

DTwins - One was DH's choice (from a shortlist I gave him), one was mine. So both mine really. Grin

insan1tyscartching · 26/02/2017 20:20

My first born was named after a childhood friend, my second was the name dm would have chosen had she had another, dd's name was chosen by my df, ds3 was named after dh's uncle and dd1 chose dd2's name.
Dh didn't get much choice tbh because all the names he suggested (Simon, Lisa and similar) I hated where he didn't mind or quite liked the ones they have.

SaudadeObama · 27/02/2017 12:59

They had to work in both languages and not change too much, so they wouldn't end up with two different names.

MissWimpyDimple · 27/02/2017 13:04

I only have one and she was many weeks early so when I had her very suddenly and quickly, the midwife asked if I had a name and i just said the name that I had considered (my grandmothers name) and then had to roll with it! I hadn't really made a decision at all at that point.

I had split from DDs dad so he didn't get much say.

Luckily he likes and it suits her perfectly.

Losgunna · 27/02/2017 13:07

Ds's name was decided about an hour before he was born, it was one previously vetoed by me because I already knew someone with a dc with that name, though it is a name I've always liked a lot. We had a girl's name picked before I was even pregnant.

GoodJobSweetie · 27/02/2017 13:10

I named DS the name I named him because I always want him to know how important he is, and also I know he will never come across with someone with the same name as him.

wobblywonderwoman · 27/02/2017 13:13

I named pur first after dh and his grandfather. Then being a traditional name, wanted something to match that. That name is also in the family.

Thought you cannot go wrong with traditional names with a bit of meaning. Very happy with both names, though they ended up being more dh choices than my own. I love Charlie, Emily and Hugh as other choices but no more DC for us.

wobblywonderwoman · 27/02/2017 13:13

Sorry for errors - our second is also traditional and in the family. It was harder to choose.

Garnethair · 27/02/2017 13:21

I named mine after friends who I grew up with.

TheFabledSnake · 27/02/2017 15:56

My daughter is named after my partner's country's national flower, which happened to be his late mother's favourite flower. He's also a gardener - it just fit!

Strokethefurrywall · 27/02/2017 16:35

DS1 - DH thought of the name as a compromise on a family name I'd wanted to consider. We both liked it, job done.

DS2 - I had the total horn on for an Aussie actor in a show who had the name and when I said "oh, XXX is a great name, what do you think DH?" - he just raised an eyebrow and said "Aye, let's use it - I'm still going to tell everyone he's named after a bloke you fancy..."
