My friend is considering this for her DD due in April. What do you think? How would you pronounce it?

I quite like it, but someone who knows better will need to say if the spelling is Ines or Inez - I thought it was Spanish and the former.

greeeen · 19/02/2017 18:26

I have an auntie called Inês and some people say eh-nez others eh-nais. Her name is the original Portuguese version. Spelt with a z is the American way, I think, so it may be a different pronunciation. Not sure if that is of any helpGrin

IHeartKingThistle · 19/02/2017 18:34

I'm from the West Country where weirdly there are a few old ladies called this! They pronounce it Eye-nez Smile

Sistafromanuthamista · 19/02/2017 18:43

I'd pronounce it as In-nez. Although, if Spanish wouldn't it be more In-nesth with a 'z'?

BingThing · 19/02/2017 19:10

I love this name but it's been vetoed by dp otherwise it would deffo be on my shortlist x

F1GI · 19/02/2017 19:16

In - ez

But I would spell it Inés

lljkk · 19/02/2017 19:31

My GG-aunt was eye-NEZ, spelled Inez. We aren't remotely Latin, btw, I guess Inez was just a popular name among Anglos in about 1900.

SuperBeagle · 19/02/2017 19:32

Inn-ez.

I'm not a fan of it.

I love it - it was on my list but I had boys. The only one I knew was french, and she spelt it Ines and pronounced it ee-nes, with slight emphasis on the second syllable. (I don't think it had an accent on the e but I could be wrong.)

oleoleoleole · 19/02/2017 19:40

Is the brother called outez?

MikeUniformMike · 19/02/2017 19:57

E-ness. Lovely name, means the same as Agnes.

NameChange30 · 19/02/2017 19:59

I like it but I'd spell it Ines.
Do either/both of the parents have any Spanish connections? Or do they just like the name?

Nel1883 · 19/02/2017 20:04

I use to like it but then someone said it sounds like anus. So now when I hear ines I think of anus.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 19/02/2017 20:07

Beautiful name. Spelling Ines is much nicer.

CaoNiMa · 19/02/2017 20:17

I prefer it spelled Ines. Inez reminds me of "pince-nez".

Sophronia · 19/02/2017 21:52

They just like the name - no Spanish connections that I know of. She pronounced it in-EZ when we spoke about it, sounds like eye-nez might be a more common pronunciation though.

This was on our list for DD and I was inclined towards the Inez spelling so it would be pronounced that way, even though we would have probably used Ness as a nickname.

stiffstink · 19/02/2017 21:53

Oh and we have no Spanish connections at all but went with a different Spanish name in the end.
