What could Iggy be short for?

LB due. Second child. Struggling with boys name. First child has an unusual name. I love Iggy but am wondering what it could be short for;aside from Ignatius (which I don't hate but DH does). Cheers!

Why not just Iggy? I know a nine year old Iggy and he really suits it Smile

WellieWanger · 19/02/2017 11:54

Maybe we just go with Iggy then?
Other boys suggestion is Sonny. FILs dad died when he was a newborn but he was nicknamed Sonny. This year FILs last familial connection to his Dad passed away and he rang me and he was so sad. He's not an emotional guy but he was saying how that's that, all he could have ever learnt about his dad he's learnt now that his Uncle has died. Maybe I am being too sentimental but Sonny is another option. Part of me feels that it's ridiculous to essentially call our kids Sun and Moon though.

I think that's quite sweet actually - the whole of the day type thing, and I wouldn't have thought of the connection without prompting

Iggy pop fan?

No, not good as a name for a human.

bobthebuddha · 19/02/2017 12:00

Ignacio is another name I've seen shortened to Iggy

WellieWanger · 19/02/2017 12:05

Thanks Petal.
Ignacio is one I haven't heard of actually, thanks.
Not an Iggy Pop fan. Although I do find his leathery face absolutely intriguing. But that's why we want it as a nickname and not as Christian given name, incase he is of the same train of thought as you when he gets older. People give their kids all sorts of nicknames.

Iggy is a real nickname type name so you could probably call him anything you like and just nn him Iggy. Loads of children get silly nn that are nothing to do with their actual name. He could be Iggy at home and on the football pitch and James or Benjamin or Robert when he's a high court judge.

daisypond · 19/02/2017 12:08

Well, Ignatius - and all its derivations, such as Ignace, Ignacio, Ignazio, Ignatios, Ignasi, Inigo, etc - means fiery one, so you've got your sun there, counterbalancing your moon!

i used to know an Ian who got called iggy
it's a bloody stupid name though

WellieWanger · 19/02/2017 12:51

I wouldn't say Ian is a stupid name root, boring and middle aged but not stupid Smile
I like Iggy as a nn and I'm his mum. We're all different. I have a friend whose nn is Squirrel. Another has always been known as Piggy from being a tot. Thank goodness we're all different in this weird and wonderful world.
Thanks for the suggestions. Will go over with DH later and decide if it still has life or not.

The Iggy I know is Iggy because his sister is Poppy and she was nicknamed 'Pop', do they just became Iggy and Pop.
No one else calls him anything but this Infact I've sat here desperately trying to work out what his name actually is...

amelie427 · 19/02/2017 16:54
