How would you pronounce Madeline?

Spelt that way?

I much prefer that spelling as it seems to be the original English (Keats has it that way) and the books.

I'm not sure yet which pronunciation I prefer so thought I'd see what the majority would say on seeing the spelling. Thank you

I'd still say Mad - de - lyn

But it's not supposed to be that is it?! Sorry. You will probably get a lifetime of incorrect pronunciation and the child correcting teachers and instructors.

Madda-lin.
I'm not sure what you'd do to get the 'line', pronunciation on the end, I also think it'll be shortened to Maddie.
Something to think about.

Mad-eh-LINE to rhyme with wine/divine/etc.

As in the little red-headed French girl from the books, and the Madeline from the Keats poem.

I think whatever spelling you use you will probably get a mix of pronunciations (lin, line, leen, len)

Agree with the poster above. Madeline is definitely the kind of name that will have people saying in different ways no matter which version you choose. So you could even alternate the pronunciation depending on your (and later on DD's) mood/inclination.

I live in Europe so we will always have pronunciation issues regardless.

I'm not a huge fan of Maddie but have accepted it. So annoying how we always tend to shorten lovely names. (Madeline is the only name that survives the mass vetoing of the lists as DH and I have such different tastes!) DS(3) loves it which is sweet.

I like both ways to pronounce it, and it's interesting it's quite 50/50 so far!

Lin (rather than Line) is winning having done a proper count!

The local version is Madalena/Maialen so she'd probably get "Len" here which is most similar to "Lin" so maybe I should go with Madda-Lin

I would pronounce it madda - lin regardless of spelling tbh.

I never knew anyone pronounced it madda-line.
