How would you pronounce Madeline?

Spelt that way?

I much prefer that spelling as it seems to be the original English (Keats has it that way) and the books.

I'm not sure yet which pronunciation I prefer so thought I'd see what the majority would say on seeing the spelling. Thank you

Mad-eh-line, love the name!

RandomMess · 18/02/2017 20:25

Mad a lin (not line)

321zerobaby · 18/02/2017 20:26

I would pronounce it madda line.

jultomten · 18/02/2017 20:26

Pretty, I would pronounce it like tin at the end.

user1471446433 · 18/02/2017 20:26

Mad a Lyn (lovely name)

RuthB4 · 18/02/2017 20:26

Mad-er-lyn Smile

StarUtopia · 18/02/2017 20:26

I'd still say Mad - de - lyn

But it's not supposed to be that is it?! Sorry. You will probably get a lifetime of incorrect pronunciation and the child correcting teachers and instructors.

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/02/2017 20:30

Madda-lin.
I'm not sure what you'd do to get the 'line', pronunciation on the end, I also think it'll be shortened to Maddie.
Something to think about.

SuperBeagle · 18/02/2017 20:30

Mad-eh-LINE to rhyme with wine/divine/etc.

As in the little red-headed French girl from the books, and the Madeline from the Keats poem.

blueskyinmarch · 18/02/2017 20:33

Mad-el-ine (to rhyme with wine)

NuffSaidSam · 18/02/2017 20:33

Mad-eh-lyn

insomniaat4am · 18/02/2017 20:49

Madder-Lin

llangennith · 18/02/2017 20:50

Mad-eh-lyn

CremeEggThief · 18/02/2017 20:51

Madalyn, but if I knew she was French, Madaleen.

WyfOfBathe · 18/02/2017 20:53

Mad-eh-line.

I think whatever spelling you use you will probably get a mix of pronunciations (lin, line, leen, len)

BettyOBarley · 18/02/2017 20:59

Madder-lyn to rhyme with tin

mistyegg · 18/02/2017 20:59

Agree with the poster above. Madeline is definitely the kind of name that will have people saying in different ways no matter which version you choose. So you could even alternate the pronunciation depending on your (and later on DD's) mood/inclination.

I live in Europe so we will always have pronunciation issues regardless.

I'm not a huge fan of Maddie but have accepted it. So annoying how we always tend to shorten lovely names. (Madeline is the only name that survives the mass vetoing of the lists as DH and I have such different tastes!) DS(3) loves it which is sweet.

I like both ways to pronounce it, and it's interesting it's quite 50/50 so far!

Lin (rather than Line) is winning having done a proper count!

The local version is Madalena/Maialen so she'd probably get "Len" here which is most similar to "Lin" so maybe I should go with Madda-Lin

KlingybunFistelvase · 18/02/2017 21:03

Mad-uh-lynn

Imaginingdragonsagain · 18/02/2017 21:06

Mad-er-Lin

MaryWortleyMontagu · 18/02/2017 21:09

Madeline = mad uh line
Madeleine = mad uh lin

Donostia · 18/02/2017 21:10

Thank you. I think we'll go with Madder Lin but also enjoy it when people say it the Line/wine way!

To me Madeleine is the more French pronunciation of

Mad a len (to rhyme with Ben)

Some of your local variations sound scrummy tbh!

RedSauce · 18/02/2017 22:22

I would pronounce it madda - lin regardless of spelling tbh.

I never knew anyone pronounced it madda-line.
