Cecily or Romy

Which do you prefer and why?

Cecily is one of my all time favourite girl names. It's beautiful and classic, but also would suit a little girl.

I'm not as keen on Romy, though it is pretty. It sounds more modern and a little bit nicknamey to me. I have no idea if it is modern though, it just sounds it to me, which puts me off a little. It sounds a bit 80s, (but that's probably due to Romy and Michelle's high school reunion though, so imagine children born now won't make that link)! I love Romilly though which you could shorten to Romy.

Sorry about using the word 'though' about 600 times in that last post!

Cecily. Romy is a bit nicknamey.

I prefer Romy, I think it's lovely.

Cecily. I don't mind Romy but it's also a male name. Romily, as mentioned, or Romola I prefer.

Though I like Cecilia just a tiny bit more than Cecily

Cecily is lovely. Sweet and sophisticated, and not often heard. I agree that Romy is a bit nicknamey, though it's nice enough. I like it short for something like Romilly, Rosamund or Ramona.

Another vote for a mash up-Romily/Romilly

Personally prefer Cecily - it's lovely. Romy makes me think of rhumy or roaming... Agree with pps that Romilly is v pretty.

I like Romy as a nn for Romilly which is a lovely name imo.

I'm going to buck the trend and say Romy, but maybe because I know two of them so it's more familiar. I'm not keen on any of the Cecily/Cecile/Cecilia type names (remind me of elderly ladies) but I know that "old lady" names are trendy at the moment.

Well as the owner of a Cecily I'm a tad biased! Romy is sweet though.

I have a Romy (so obviously that is my favourite) - pronounced to rhyme with Tommy not Row-me/Roe-me. I prefer it like that and it suits our little girl. She is actually a Romilly on her birth certificate but we have always called her Romy.

I'd go for Romy. But Cecily is sweet.

As to why, I have loved that name for years.

I went to school with a Romy, everyone called her "Rhombus".

Posted too soon.... I do like it though and the nickname only came up after the maths lesson on shapes (I don't even think the two sound remotely alike but that's teens for you).

Cecily is lovely. Classic but not over-used. Who else remembers Katy Carr's friend Cecy?

Romilly is quite nice, better than Romy.

I really like Romy, she sounds like a very cool/chic young Parisian girl to me! Cecily makes me think of lisping, something to do with Cecil/ Thethil the caterpillar I think? I want to like it though. Much prefer Cecelia?
